Michael Bowers, GOGF correspondent for weird stuff, passes along this news, which he found on a blog called The Goat, which The Goat apparently found on the Outside blog. Anyway ... if you look very closely at this picture, just below the rim of 127-foot Salto Belo in Brazil you'll see a spec. That spec is Pedro Oliva, in a kayak, setting the world freefall record in a boat. Oliva, apparently, is part of the World Record Attempt Expedition, part of Team Jackson Kayak, that's been traveling the globe looking for big drops to paddle off. When they heard that heavy rains had swollen Rio Sacre, the river that tumbles over Salto Belo, they figured that the high water volume — 5,000 cubic feet per second — might break the surface tension enough to let Oliva survive the impact. (Might? No matter how well his skirt held, you can bet that kayak was wet inside.)
Oliva broke the previous record of a 108-foot drop off Canada's Alexandra Falls set in 2007 by Tyler Bradt.
