When I'm in a mountain bike race and a Jill Whitfield or a Tammy Kaufman comes from behind and politely asks if they can pass, please, it doesn't occur to me that female riders need any sort of specific help. But, as has been explained to me time again, sometimes the gals would just as soon not ride with the guys. Perhaps because ones like me are always in their way.
When you have a moment, if it's not a bother, might I pass, please?
Whatever the reason, TORC and The Clean Machine are teaming to put on the "Bikin' Broads Maintenance Class and Dirt School" the first weekend in December. Saturday, from 7-9 p.m. is the Maintenance half of the course (including "wine/cheese/treats"; I'll reserve comment) at The Clean Machine's home base in Carrboro. Sunday from 1-4 p.m. is the Dirt School portion of the class. That will be at Lake Crabtree County Park, will accommodate all skill levels, and will include practice riding "wooden obstacles" (which I assume includes the one crazy zig-zag skinny that ends in a teeter-totter). It's free. All you need to bring, to Sunday's ride, is your bike and a helmet.
If Jill and Tammy are involved, I'm sure they'll go over proper etiquette for politely passing guys.
