Centennial Campus greenway: a start?

Took a scouting trip this afternoon of the Walnut Creek Greenway, the findings of which I'll report in the August 3 Fit column in the Arts & Living section of Your News & Observer. But thought I'd share one of the more intriguing sights along my 32-mile journey (I started from my Cary headquarters).

Eventually, the Walnut Creek Greenway will run from Lake Johnson east to the Neuse River. One of the biggest missing links at this point is the stretch of greenway through N.C. State's Centennial Campus. It will link the city's existing greenway to the west at Trailwood Drive with the city's existing greenway to the east at Lake Wheeler Road (just across from the State Farmer's Market).

Off and on, for a year now, I've been trying to get an update on the Centennial Campus Greenway, which is under the domain of N.C. State. I've had a dickens of a time getting anyone involved with the project to call me back. Today, though, I saw what I believe is an encouraging sign. See that ribbon of exposed earth? I noticed it off the west side of Centennial Parkway in the vicinity of where, word has it, the greenway is supposed to run.

Has construction begun? Is the long-awaited greenway in the works? The callback gods willing, I'll let you know soon.

Has construction begun? Is the long-awaited greenway in the works?

No, that is a sewer pipe running from the building it connects to, to the existing pipeline at the other end.

Projected paths.....

Here is another document that gives a map of where the paths will go (pg 90).

I suspect that bennymac is

I suspect that bennymac is right, that this probably has something to do with the golf course.
Although, you will notice that part of the Centennial Campus greenway actualy HAS been constructed. It stretches from a dead end behind some apartments near the intersection of Centennial and Avent Ferry, along North Creek to Lake Raleigh, as far as the new Lake Raleigh public access. I think this is called "Centennial Campus Greenway phase 1". As per the NCSU construction status page: http://www.ncsu.edu/facilities/construction_info/status/non-bond_project...
this project was to be completed 5/16/2008. The next CC greenway phase goes out to bid 7/31/2008, and the expected completion date is 1/19/2009. No idea the extent of CC Greenway Phase II - will it extend west to Trailwood, or will it extend east to (and across) Lake Wheeler Rd? Both? Something completely different?

HA! Good luck getting anyone

HA! Good luck getting anyone at N.C. State to call you back. They are all too important, doing science stuff, to call back.
Unless you have a check of $10,000 or more to donate.
Also, they will build the golf course before they will build the greenway. Don't hold your breath.
