Is what you recycle really getting recycled?

Bookmark and Share

Do you ever get that feeling of satisfaction when your trash is less than half of what you're recycling? You might want to double check everything you chucked into your recycling bin -- even though items may be recyclable doesn't mean they're getting recycled.

Some of the most common items I've seen people toss into their bins are pizza boxes and other carry-out food containers. However, these cannot be recycled due to food residue, especially the oils from pizza, which damages the material. And when it comes to plastic, non-bottles are usually not accepted in the recycling programs in the Triangle area. Do you want to know why? The city of Raleigh offers explanations why certain items cannot be recycled in its program.

So before you toss anything else into your recycling bin, check with your local recycling program to make sure it's an acceptable item. Below is a list of county, town and city sites in the area where you can find recycling information online.
