Bizarre litter nets cash for three volunteers

Bookmark and Share

What do a rare coin, a boat and a paycheck have in common? These were chosen as the three most unusual items in Keep NC Beautiful's spring 2011 Most Unusual Litter Contest.

The $250 first-place prize went to Kemila Slade of the Pink Sapphire Ladies in New Bern, who found a 1730 George Farthing coin on Neuse Boulevard.

Michella Huff of the Mount Airy Litterbugs was awarded the $100 second-place prize for finding a boat on the side of Piedmont Triad West Drive.

The $50 third-place winner was Elaine Hatfield of Fayetteville, who discovered a paycheck on the side of Sycamore Dairy Road. She returned the lost check to the rightful owner.

Other entries in the spring contest can be found on KNCB's Facebook page.

The contest is sponsored by Pepsico and is held during the N.C. Department of Transportation's spring and fall Litter Sweep cleanup events.
