This past weekend, I went to the Pinehurst Wine and Food Festival. It was my third time at the event and I always leave thinking I know something about wine but forget it three weeks later.
So before I forget, I wanted to mention a few bottles of wine that I really enjoyed.
Full disclosure: My brother-in-law Don Padgett is the president of the Pinehurst Resort. My sister is really into food and wine and invited my husband and I down for the weekend. We tasted lots of wine, ate good food and attended wine seminars.
My favorite was Terra Andina Sauvignon Blanc. It's a Chilean wine. Not only was it easy summer drinking but the price is right at about $8 a bottle. I think it appeals to my frugal side.
The second one I enjoyed was from the Steele Winery, Shooting Star Black Bubbles. It is a sparkling Syrah, which I had never tasted before but reminded me of a Lambrusco. It retails for about $16 a bottle.
Finally, I attended a seminar about the Gruet Winery in New Mexico. They are a French family with a champagne winery back home but also this winery in the States. We did a side-by-side comparison of the family's New Mexico sparkling wines and their French champagnes. The New Mexico wines were excellent and cost far less money. My favorite was the Blanc de Blancs, which costs $25 a bottle. That's much more reasonable for a celebration than a bottle from France.
