And the winner is Keith Mason of Coats.
Mason won a pair of tickets to see Food Network host Guy Fieri’s traveling roadshow Saturday at Memorial Auditorium in Raleigh.
N&O readers had so many excellent recommendations for their favorite diners, drive-ins and dives (like the show that Fieri hosts) that I had to narrow the entries and choose the winner at random. Mason’s recommendations were Sadlack’s in Raleigh, Backyard Barbecue Pit, which has two locations in Durham, and Crook’s Corner in Chapel Hill.
(Although I would quibble with the readers, like Mason, who suggested fine dining establishments like Crook's, Mo's Diner and Poole's Downtown Diner, are diners in the truest sense of the word. When entrees cost more than $20, that eatery is NOT a diner. I'm sure some of you also will quibble with your peers' recommendations below.)
Thanks to all who wrote in with their suggestions. The Gateway Restaurant and the Diner in Smithfield were the most recommended.

RIP Joe's Place
Wed, 11/18/2009 - 16:13 — RonBJoe's and Mecca are/were the closest to "diner" in Raleigh. And Oak City diner on Wake Forest Road, though it was way past its prime when it closed.
There are several good diners/dives listed -- Elmo's, Finch's, Big Ed's, Watkins, etc. The barbecue places are good, but are quite limited outside of pig and chicken.
Busy Bee, Raleigh Times, and Satisfactions in Durham are too good to be "dives", though they pick up the positive aspects of that label. I hope the diner replacing Hard Times on Glenwood follows suit.
Wilber's Barbecue
Wed, 11/18/2009 - 10:22 — nctravellinmanThanks for a great list! I will definitely be doing "field verifications" over the next month :)
The pancakes are also awesome at Griffin's in Youngsville. They make their own batter from scratch.
The Goldsboro mecca for barbecue, Wilber's, is misspelled in your listing. It is not Wilbur's. I know you don't want to antagonize the legion of barbecue purists in NC.
I was up very late last
