Pintful: Keep an eye out for Lebanese Beer

Bookmark and Share

A recent article about Lebanese craft beer on the News & Observer's website caught my eye. The story from the Chicago Tribune highlighted 961 Beer, which is being distributed in the U.S. now. The company said in a January press release that is available on the East Coast first, in New England and as far south as Virginia with hopes to expand further later this year.

Amazingly enough, I've had this beer -- and it's pretty interesting. A friend whose parents live in Lebanon brought it back to North Carolina after a visit last year. The one I remember most is the Lebanese Pale Ale brewed with brewed with thyme, sumac, chamomile, sage, anise and mint, as the article notes. To put it bluntly: it was a little much. I wanted to pour it into a spaghetti sauce or a soup, where that level of spice would find a better fit. The Wit and Lager were simple, less complex than others in the category. But the article says 961 Beer is working on more ambitious seasonal beers to come, so keep any eye out.
