Two more local food blogs

Tags: Mouthful

I wanted to highlight two other Triangle food blogs that are now linked off the Mouthful home page.

One is IndieNC, a blog for an online boutique where contributors write about food and farms.

The other is Raleigh Specials Tonight, a great resource for those wanting a deal on drinks or dinner in Raleigh. It lists the specials by night of the week. It doesn't get much better than that.

R&R Grill opens on Franklin Street

The R&R Grill opened this week at 137 E. Franklin St. in Chapel Hill.

Father and son team, Rob and Ross Moll, spent more than a $1 million to update the 5,300-square foot space formerly occupied by Goldie’s Grill and Papagayo’s. The renovation includes a new kitchen, a 3,000-square foot covered patio and granite bar tops.

Judging Peach Day recipes

This morning, I judged the recipe contest for Peach Day at the State Farmers Market in Raleigh.

Another gluten-free cooking class

Tags: Mouthful

Jules Shepard’s class was so popular earlier this month at Earth Fare that she scheduled another for Aug. 1.

Scratch Baking at 3Cups tonight

Phoebe Lawless of Scratch Seasonal Artisan Baking will be at 3Cups tonight. Lawless is baking up flatbreads to be paired with Mediterranean fare and summer wines.

The cost is $18 in advance or $22 at the door. The event goes from 6-8 p.m. Call 968-8893 to RSVP.

Barbecue Boot Camp

If you have always wanted to learn from real pit masters, this is your chance.

The N.C. Barbecue Society is offering a one-day camp for teenage boys, ages 15-18, and a three-day cooking event for adults in Corolla this fall.

Want a blue ribbon?

Then you should enter a cooking contest at the N.C. State Fair. Some new contests have been announced: “Best Cookie Contest for Kids,” “Dream Up a Delicious Dessert Pie,” and somethng called “Get Creative with your Cereal,” which involves Malt-o-Meal cold cereal.
The deadline is Oct. 10. So start brainstorming and check out the state fair premium book for more information.

Bargain Bytes: Early bird tasting menu at Elaine's

Nightly from 5:30 to 6:30, Elaine's is offering a three course tasting menu for $35. Just the ticket if you're looking for a special pre-theater dinner.

Zely & Ritz Tomato Dinners

Zely & Ritz is offering a series of heirloom tomato dinners starting tonight.

The five courses sound delicious and the dessert, a sun gold tomato panna cotta, sounds intriguing. Those tomatoes are like candy anyway. What a perfect idea for a dessert.

Call 828-0018 to see if you can still get a seat at 7 p.m. tonight. Otherwise there are heirloom tomato dinners on July 27, July 29, Aug. 4 and Aug. 13.

The cost is $49 per person or $79 per person with wine pairings.

Today: Peach Day at the State Farmers Market

Tags: Mouthful

Today is Peach Day at the State Farmers Market in Raleigh from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. Who wouldn't want to come out to taste some peaches and peach ice cream. That sounds like a lunch break.

It gets even better: the newly crowned North Carolina Peach Queen will be there. I bet you could get your photo taken with her.

For more details, go to www.ncpeach.com.

(I'll be judging the peach recipe contest this morning. I'll be back with a full report on the blog this afternoon. Let's hope I don't have to taste anything as awful as the strawberry mint banana pudding that was entered on Strawberry Day!)
