Eastern Triangle Farm Tour this weekend

The Eastern Triangle Farm Tour is Saturday and Sunday. It includes 20 farms, a talk on how to raise urban chickens and storytellers at a couple farms. The event is a self-guided tour of farms from Pittsboro to Bunn from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

Weekend Warrior: Lemon Chicken with Croutons

Each Friday, I share a recipe for when we have more time to cook: the weekend.

This recipe is my go to recipe for cooking a whole chicken: Lemon Chicken with Croutons. The buttered croutons are absolutely indulgent. But that's what I expect from Ina Garten, who hosts the Barefoot Contessa show on The Food Network. I can't remember which cookbook this came from but I trust her recipes. Now, I always at least cook my chickens with lemon inside.

In today's paper: honey tasting, critter cook-off

Tags: Mouthful

I'm late in putting this up but that's what happens when you try to leave for vacation: everything piles up at the last minute.

I wrote a story about honey tasting as a new Rosh Hashana tradition here

I also wrote a story about eating superworms, mealworms and crickets at last week's critter cook-off.

In his weekly Epicurean column, Greg Cox writes about the new Clay Pit in Durham and Manuel Mediterranean Grille & Pizza in Morrisville.

Greg's Hot List this week is Mexican restaurants in the Triangle.

Frugal Feasts: Corn Pudding

Each Wednesday, I offer a recipe based on what's on sale at the grocery store. Today, I'm doing things a little different. I suspect many folks will be shopping at the Harris Teeter because triple coupons has returned. I also wanted to highlight cooking what's in season and therefore cheaper. So I decided to offer a recipe for corn pudding, which can make a lovely main dish with a green salad.

Corn at Harris Teeter is 50 cents an ear. Plus, Harris Teeter shredded cheese is $1.97 for 8 ounces and Harris Teeter brand large eggs are 97 cents for a dozen. Those are key ingredients for corn pudding. Or you could get a better deal by shopping at a farmers market, where corn is
cheaper.

In fact, this recipe comes from  Deborah Madison's cookbook, "Local Flavors: Cooking and Eating from America's Farmers' Markets."

Julia's Boeuf Bourguignon

Here is the recipe that goes with Lisa Eveleigh's La Residence and Julia Child essay in today's paper: Julia Child’s Boeuf Bourguignon
