If there is a coffee aficionado in your life, you might want to snag them a bottle or two of Raleigh's own Slingshot Coffee for a stocking stuffer.
Jennifer Bonchak, 33, is the force behind this locally-made cold-brewed coffee. She wanted to own her own business in specialty coffee. Having been a fan of cold brew and the Durham-based Counter Culture Coffee, she is now using their coffees to produce seasonal cold brews as a ready to drink beverage and a concentrate.
"It's been really fun to share coffee in a different way," Bonchak says.
Bonchak says cold brewing the coffee produces an extremely sweet and smooth drink without a lot of the acidity that you can get with a hot brewed cup of coffee.
She also wants people to realize that coffee is a seasonal crop, like fruits and vegetables. Certain coffees taste better at certain times of the year: an Ethiopian coffee is perfect for summer with its lemony, floral notes, while her fall seasonal coffee has more body and is reminiscent of a nice, clean bourbon.
Boncak launched Slingshot Coffee at the end of May. Her cold brew coffee is now available online and in stores all over the Triangle, including Whole Foods locations and craft beers stores, such as Tasty Beverage Co. and Bottle Revolution, both in Raleigh. Prices range from $5.99 for the ready to drink beverage with two servings or $10.99 for the concentrate with up to five servings.
