This may not turn out to be a good idea. But I try not to turn down such requests, regardless of what I'm asked to eat. The Bugfest Critter Cookoff at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 10.
Here's what the museum folks told me in an e-mail: "In the Bugfest Critter Cookoff, two chefs compete to create the best dishes with a secret ingredient of bugs! We try to get judges who have adventurous palates who would like to test the boundaries of their appetites. The event is also a great way to connect with the community. As a food writer for the N&O, I thought you had the perfect credentials! Yes, you will have to eat some bugs -- but only a few, prepared to perfection by some great chefs!"
A co-worker who knows me well quipped: "Maybe you'll get lucky and it will taste like bacon."
Believe me, I will share the experience on this blog.
