I just learned about another N.C. craft distiller hoping to get bottles in ABC stores by the end of the year. Blue Ridge Distilling Co. based in the Golden Valley area of Rutherford Count is owned by Tim Ferris, who operates Defiant Marine, an international commercial marine salvage company.
Steve Heineman, the distillery's business office manager, says their first product will be called Defiant Whiskey, a single-malt American whiskey made from 100 % barley and aged for six months to a year. A fifth will cost about $78, which Heineman points out costs less than most bottles of similar products at $80 to $100.
Eventually, Heineman says, they will sell a whiskey aged for four years and seasonal brandies. For more information, go to blueridgedistilling.com.

Thu, 10/04/2012 - 06:43 — dwcattyHe wants to sell a six month single malt for $78? Laphroaig is a 10 YEAR single malt available in the $50s, Glenmorangie is another 10 year that retails in the $30s, I believe, and Talisker, yet another 10 year single malt, can be had for $40. To get to the $80 to $100 range he mentions you have to go to Lagavulin, a 16 year single malt. How he thinks his 6 month malt compares with that, I don't know.
Perhaps he should set his sights on McClelland's, makers of single malts of indeterminate age that retail for $24 here in NC.
Best flipping whiskey I have ever tasted
Thu, 01/03/2013 - 18:34 — MichaelClarkMy mom's side of the family is from Morganton/Golden Valley, and I was lucky enough to get a tour over the holidays.
I normally drink the Glen Morangie 12 yr's with port or sherry finish.
I have had the 25 yr Glen Morangie (yes $700, Christmas present from dad). It was the best whiskey I had ever had.
Defiant is better.
I would feel dirty for saying anything against the 16 men Tain(Glen Morangie), but I think they would agree. Defiant is better!!!
PLUS, what I tasted was their second production run.
Imagine what Tim Ferris and his group can do in the future.
Defiant is in a class all of it's own and I think we'll see a shake up in the whiskey world once it hits nationwide distribution.
I've been a Technology consultant for most of my life, many sales dinners and never worried with the price. This is the best whiskey I've ever had the pleasure to drink. (period)
Blue Ridge Distillery is on the path to disrupt the whiskey industry.
I am a convert for life.
