WRAL's Goodmon: School coverage too balanced

Bookmark and Share

Jim Goodmon, CEO of Capitol Broadcasting, said this week that reporting of the student assignment issue in Wake County had been too balanced. Goodmon, a vocal supporter of Wake schools' long-standing diversity policy, said that reporters typically talked with each side of the debate and then quit reporting. He compared it to a reporter working on a story about whether the Earth is round or flat. The reporter quotes one academic saying the Earth is flat and another saying it's round. "I've done my job. Film at 11," Goodmon said. He believes deeper reporting would show that the diversity policy is the correct course to take.

Goodmon made his comments Monday at the annual Martin Luther King Triangle Interfaith Prayer breakfast. Capitol Broadcasting owns WRAL-TV and its website. He said WRAL reporters are "the best." But he said, "I'm mad at them." Goodmon did not mention The News & Observer but confirmed later that his comments included coverage of the issue in The N&O. --John Drescher

Diversity

I wonder how long his daughter stayed in Ravenscroft after the 3rd grade. Because she was there until then...

I heard Goodman make the comments

I did not get the impression Goodmon was being biased but rather he challenged his reporters, he said he was mad with them, for not doing the vetting of the facts surrounding the positions being reported.

I think if reporters take Goodmon's admonitions to heart then a lot of the supposition that is batted around as fact would be unfounded.

I am certain that anyone who attended JW Ligon High School in April of 1968 thought that in 2008 we would have gone through the Civil Rights era with the chant "... if you are white you are right, if you are black, step back...",  JW Ligon High School would be closed.  Having their desire for new school books and resources twisted to mean that they didn't want to add to their successes like JW Ligon but rather do away with JW Ligon High School still has a profound effect on everyone from that generation.

Friends, if you think anyone who was in Raleigh in 1968 does not feel a deep sense of lost when we hear about the accomplishments of Hillside High School in Durham, knowing the rivalry that was once part of the culture of SE Raleigh have no idea.   How would those reading this blog think if there was no State vs Carolina, Saint Aug vs. Shaw feel?  Imagine the social and economic impact on the communities affected?

I choose 1968 because that was the year that Martin was assassinated.  Think about the generation of young black minds attending Ligon knowing that when they left their homes, whether in Chavis Heights, Walnut Terrace, Biltmore Hills/Rochester Heights or South Park, knew they had a sense of place at Ligon.  They knew that if college prep was not the best course of training for them then brick laying, plumbing, home ec, business training was available to them.  Those that were preparing for college were provided the very best in educational opportunities notwithstanding the disparity in resources, i,e., used school books.  They were fighting for the same resources their counter parts at Broughton had.  No where in anyone's wildest dreams did the nightmare of closing J. W. Ligon as a High School exist.

But what is more interesting and deserving of the reporters inquiry is why is it that after 40 years the areas surrounding the 'high poverty' schools exist in South East Raleigh?  With all the economic advancement that has occurred over the past 40 years why is it that we have areas that are now known all over the globe as extremely 'high poverty' and that they exist in the predominately black areas of Raleigh, North Carolina, the state capital.  But then after 40 years "...if you are white you are right and if you are black step back..." is as real today as it was 40 years ago.

So if Mr. Goodmon’s reporters can address the questions I have raised above I think we will further understand the challenge before us today.  This writer has faith that we can pull ourselves together and address the core issues of lifting and embracing our children vs. assigning the children.

We have been asking for years

Prove it and your troubles will go away. Of course, let everyone look a the data you derived your conclusion from. Heck, I believe we had a $500 reward at one time, Zero takers.

Results from Wake County only please.

Now, THAT is funny!

Almost as funny as Colbert was, but this guy is serious, making it sad more than truly funny since no humor is intended in his comments.

Sheesh - is it any wonder the pro-diversity mindset is so bitter!  Here's one.

LOL What a nut that Goodmon

LOL What a nut that Goodmon is; he's become and embarrassment to the area.  I know he's always been an arrogant extreme left-wing nutcase, but this is just irresponsible. Based in his looney tunes comment, one gets the sense the old codger surround himself with left-wing acolytes who feed his extremism. Weird, very weird

"Citizen Kane" Goodmon

Jim apparently now considers himself The Triangle's very own "Citizen Kane".  "Citizen Goodmon" will determine whats good for all of us and thats what Citizen Goodmon will feed to us.

Thanks for the warning Jim.  You limo liberals are a real "hoot".  I'm not a fan of the WCPSS as a whole, but I'm even less a fan of yours now Jim.
