That cigarette butt

Bookmark and Share

Orange Editor Mark Schultz was driving in Chapel Hill the other day when he saw the driver of the car in front toss a cigarette out the window.  Offended by the littering, Schultz posted three paragraphs about this in the blog that our Chapel Hill office runs, OrangeChat.

His blog post touched off a lively discussion and got more than 1,000 hits from readers. If you want to join in the conversation, go to the blog.

cigarette butts

I regularly report people who toss their cigarette butts out their car window at DOT;s Swat-a-Litterbug web site.

I don't care if someone smokes in their car, but it really jacks me to see someone who thinks our community is their personal ash tray. It really gets me when I see someone from out-of-state do this - since I cannot report them - and I want to tell them to go back to where they came from.

It's a nasty habit

Ordinarily, I don't take the time to care what other people do with their own bodies, but cigarettes are a nasty habit and their residue affects us all.

The smoke, the smell......takes over a room.

It settles into the clothing of other people in the room.

Smoking not only stains the smoker's teeth, but is the number one cause of wrinkling of the skin after sun damage.

Moreover, cigarette butts litter our sidewalks and our streets.

Why can smokers not comprehend that cigarette butts are LITTER!!!!!!

I hate them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
