Bruce Tinsley started drawing "Mallard Fillmore" in 1990 when he worked at The Daily Progress in Charlottesville, Va. Tinsley drew Mallard as the mascot for a new entertainment section. The publisher liked it so much he asked Tinsley to expand his work into an ongoing narrative, which became a kind of graphic novel.
Then Tinsley, a political conservative, added political and cultural commentary and MF eventually evolved into a comic strip. Tinsley says he was asked by management to "moderate my ideology." He refused and was fired. His work moved to The Washington Times. Since 1994, "Mallard Fillmore" has been syndicated and now appears in about 400 newspapers.
Should The N&O be one of them? We've run "Mallard" since January. Many readers like it. Many other readers don't like it. In August, Ted Vaden, N&O public editor, said we should pluck the duck: "Tinsley's cartoon has morphed from political satire to political propaganda....I don't think the newspaper has an obligation to continue an unfair partisan strip out of a contrived sense of balance."
Let me know what you think we should do. Post your comments below. I'll announce my decision in Saturday's paper.

Mallard Fillmore
Wed, 03/11/2009 - 20:11 — ElizaMooreI have found this comic strip to be a very offensive anti democratic and anti Obama diatribe of immature nonsense. We have been blessed with the First Amendment, however, Mr. Tinsley needs to accept the fact that McCain lost and realize how childish and ridiculous he sounds. It is time for him to stop shaking his little fists and stomping his little feet and grow up.
Drescher's winning style

An excellent column by Drescher this morning.
Just read it in my morning paper and thought those who only read online should be prompted to take a look.
Please take note of the distinction Drescher makes between himself and editorial page editor Steve Ford.
There it is folks.
That is one of the most significant reasons why readers have such a difficult time getting a panoramic view of current issues.
Let me reiterate that I am not a reader of the comic section. Just not on my radar screen; however, this is where many readers go each day for amusement and enlightenment.
Why should only a Trudeau strip have a prominent place on the op-ed page?
Because a man who has been running the editorial page for decades says so!
This could not be a better example of a death-warmed-over-set-in-his-ways-Lefty.
I say, let Drescher run the entire paper!
At least readers would get all points-of-view without tap-dancing all over to find them.

Pluck Vaden

LOL!!!
ROTFLM-T's-O !!!
Does Vaden, or anyone else in charge of the final product when the paper goes out each day, come close to comprehending how utterly amusing this is on a Friday morning?
Vaden has just defined himself with bull's eye accuracy.
Let me make clear that I don't read the comic strips and rarely even give them a second thought.
I do, however, remember the performance of Ted Vaden during every controversy at the N&O.
Vaden is no "public editor". He's effectively superfluous window dressing (read, worthless commentary....read, worthless for readers' benefit.....read, a yes-guy for already-existing biases at the N&O)......and I could go on....
I know it's a quaint concept, but newspapers should welcome decidedly partisan views FROM ALL SIDES. If this comic strip has morphed into "political propaganda", so what?
My G/d, Vaden. That's what you do every day when you roll out of bed and put your pants on. Do you really believe that an intelligent reader thinks you are objective?
You can't even admit to and discuss many of the core realities which exist around you. So how can such a person comment on those realities?
I enjoy debate far too much to silence other people and exclude them from a conversation. Only a cowardly fool attempts to muzzle the opinions of others. Your method of dealing with controversy is to flee or hide from it.
You never come out and respond to anything that requires serious attention. Frankly, I would be afraid to allow you to dust the furniture given some of the inane and cowardly comments you have made during your tenure at the N&O.
If John Drescher wants to cut a few corners and improve the newspaper, he needs to find someone to serve the public good who has grown a set and is strong enough to do some heavy lifting when required.
