Matt Richards, a 15-year-old 10th-grader from Raleigh has been flying remote-controlled airplanes for four years. Matt got his start flying RC plains when his father Bob Richards, also an RC flyer, took him to a Fly-for-Tots event. Fly-for-Tots is an event that raises money for underprivileged children. Matt liked what he saw at the event and wanted to start flying RC planes.
Matt prefers buying electric model planes and putting them together. "Gas planes are just too much maintenance" the 15-year-old said. Matt and his father own over 20 different model airplanes.
Matt also competes in numerous competitions like aerobatics and flying in different sequence. He has won six awards competing in these competitions. I asked Matt why he enjoys this hobby so much? "I love doing it to meet different people," he said.
