Eastern Wake Buzz

Change has become a constant in our world these days. All over the eastern Wake County region the landscape is changing. But one thing remains the same. We still share a strong common interest in what’s happening in our community. The Eastern Wake News blog -- now called the Eastern Wake Buzz -- is the place to go to learn about the changes taking place in our part of the world and to share your thoughts on the news of the day. Regular entries are posted by news staffers Brian High, Aaron Moody, Denise Sherman and Johnny Whitfield. We’d love to share the latest buzz with you. We can’t wait to read your comments and insights.

Spelling bee a fun fundraiser

Bookmark and Share

Three local organizations are making plans to host an Adult spelling bee next month.

The event will be held April 22 from 6-8 p.m. at East Wake High School. It is sponsored by the Zebulon Chamber of Commerce, the East Wake Business Alliance and the East Wake Education Foundation.

If you've never seen an adult spelling bee before, you're in for a treat. It works like this: local businesses, organization and clubs sponsor teams of four players. The moderator calls out each word, defines it and uses it in a sentence. The teams write the proper spelling of the word on a sheet of paper. Judges check for accuracy. No one has to stand up in front of a crowd and spell a tough word.

For teams that can't spell a certain word, they can buy their way back into the game for $25, or people in the audience can buy them back in.

Once the elimination rounds begin, it's spell it right or drop out.

The fundraiser will support grants for classroom teachers at nine schools in the Wendell and Zebulon area. You'd be surprised to find out who some of the best spellers in our area just might be.

To enter your team, call the Zebulon Chamber office at 269-6320.
