Wendell's library appears to be off the chopping block for now.
Wake County Manager David Cooke released his budget proposal yesterday and the plan does not call for closing the Wendell branch. Cooke's proposal does call for closing two branches — the Athens Drive branch and the Duraleigh branch.
Wendell residents were alarmed by a proposal earlier this year which would have shuttered four library branches, including the Wendell branch.
In his budget plan, Cooke warns that library hours of operation could be reduced as a cost-savings measure, but the plan does not include specifics.
The budget proposal could still change, as county commissioners and the public begin to study the document.
There will be a pair of public hearings on the budget June 1. The first is set for 2 p.m. at the Wake County Courthouse. The other begins at 7 p.m. in the Wake County Commons Buildingon Carya Drive.
In addition to the library issue, Cooke's budget plan calls for trimming 120 jobs, most of which are currently vacant. The county's property tax rate would remain the same.
