Who doesn't love a birthday party?
Most of us enjoy them. There are gifts, cake and ice cream, fun and games. You know the drill.
The Wendell Public Library will celebrate its 60th birthday July 15 beginning at 6 p.m.
This birthday party will be better than most, though, because you don't have to buy a gift. Instead, the celebrant is offering the gifts. much as it has for the past 60 years. Children of all ages have walked through the doors of libraries in any of its locations over the years and been swept away to far off lands, full of romance and adventure.
With the advent of technology, the library has become an even more utilitarian place. People without other means have been able to access the Internet, collect information, conduct their own research and even search for a job.
Folks in Wendell have always valued their library, even if, sometimes we took that value for granted. When the county's top librarian prepared an austerity plan a couple years ago that included shuttering the Wendell library, people realized just how much they valued that institution.
It's hard to go to the library without finding it full of people reading, looking for books, or taking part in some kind of library activity.
Next week's birthday party gives you a chance to tell your library staff just how much you appreciate the services they have to offer. You'll likely find a crowd there again.
