Which team does Mike Krzyzewski NOT want to play on his birthday?

Here at the N&O, we were all ready to go for the first Duke vs. UNC Valentine’s Day date since 1945. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be, but Mike Krzyzewski will, for the first time in his life, get to spend his birthday coaching against the Tar Heels.

While at Duke, Krzyzewski has coached on his birthday 11 times. Considering that Feb. 13 is in the middle of conference play, I would have expected it to happen more often.  Anyway, Duke is 7-4 on that date, and all of the Blue Devils struggles have come courtesy of one team.

Wake Forest.

Not only are the Demon Deacons the only team to beat Krzyzewski on his birthday, but they’ve done it four times. All but the 1982 matchup (in Krzyzewski’s 2nd year) came in upset fashion, with the real stunner coming in 1994, as the unranked Demon Deacons knocked off No. 2 Duke.

Perhaps Jeff Bzdelik should see what it would take to make the Feb. 13 Duke vs. Wake Forest game a permanent fixture.

Feb. 13, 2011 at Miami: 81-71 W

Feb. 13, 2010 vs. Maryland: 77-56 W

Feb. 13, 2008 vs. Maryland: 77-65 W

Feb. 13, 2003 at Wake Forest: 94-80 L, 2 OT

Feb. 13, 1999 vs. Wake Forest: 102-71 W

Feb. 13, 1994 at Wake Forest: 78-69 L

Feb. 13, 1993 vs. Wake Forest: 98-86 L

Feb. 13, 1991 vs. Davidson: 74-29 W

Feb. 13, 1988 at Maryland: 90-82 W

Feb. 13, 1985 vs. Stetson: 94-51 W

Feb. 13, 1982: vs. Wake Forest: 86-71 L

Overall: 7-4

(for the record, Army does not track the date of games with its all-time results)

2/7 of 32 is less than 11

Duke has played 2 games per week in February during Mike Krzyzewski's 32 years at Duke. The expected number of games on any calendar day is 2/7 of 32, or about 9.

a little simplistic

Actually since the ACC "NEVER" plays games on Fridays, so in any given week the number would be  2/6 of 32  or a little over 10.

And that assumes you count 1995, which Duke seems to count or not count depending upon how positively or negatively reflects his numbers.

And due to ACC scheduling it is not as simple as that.  The number is also affected since one of those two games a week will be played you would actually be played on one of two of the six days remaining (Saturday and Sunday) while the second one would be played on one of the four remaining days (Monday through Thursday).

So if the 13th was on a Saturday or Sunday there is a 50% chance there will be a game on his birthday.  Oh the conspiracy!

Clearly your math is more on

Clearly your math is more on target than my hunches. Thanks for reading.
