DURHAM -- In the game before the big game, the Duke Blue Devils ran into a feisty Miami team that showed no fear inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The Blue Devils did rally as they usually do at home – only this time the Hurricanes were ready to respond.
Even when Duke forced overtime, the Hurricanes never wavered.
Center Reggie Johnson led Miami with a career-high 27 points, and the Hurricanes never trailed in overtime to pull a 78-74 upset of the seventh-ranked Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils did have their chances, especially at the free-throw line.
Backup guard Quinn Cook missed two foul shots in the final minute that could have given Duke the lead. He also missed a running floater in the lane. As a team, Duke missed nine free throws.
Duke (19-4, 6-2 ACC) also struggled with turnovers, rebounding and defending Johnson in the paint.
With less than 30 second remaining in regulation, guard Austin Rivers drove to the basket and was fouled. He missed the first free throw, but made the second to tie the game at 69-69.
Miami could have won on the final possession of regulation, but the Blue Devils had one of their best moments on defense – which resulted in the Hurricanes not getting a shot off – to force overtime.
Still, the Blue Devils will remember this game for what they didn’t do down the stretch.
And with a game against an improving North Carolina team on the road Wednesday night, this wasn’t the type of performance Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski wanted just before one of the biggest conference games of the season.
The Hurricanes (14-7, 5-3 ACC) exposed the Blue Devils inability at times to rebound and stopping dribble penetration.
Miami’s performance was similar to what Florida State did Jan. 21.
Against the Seminoles, the Blue Devils let their lead escape in the second half before falling 76-73 on the game’s final possession when guard Michael Snaer made a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
On offense at times, Duke settled for long-distance jump shots, which left forwards like Mason Plumlee and Ryan Kelly out of position for rebounds.
Rivers and guard Seth Curry were the few exceptions. Rivers had 20 points by driving to the basket and making open jumpers.
Rivers also found Curry for shots. The two played off one another in the second half. Curry, who led Duke with 22 points, was able to make a few shots on the perimeter.
Curry gave the Blue Devils their first lead of the second half with a jumper on the free-throw line with less than two minutes remaining.
Before then, Duke trailed by as many as 16 points.
The last time Duke trailed by that many at home, the Blue Devils rally to be UNC 79-73 last year. This time though, Duke played well in spurts, but not in overtime. In that period, the Blue Devils rushed shots and didn’t double team Johnson, who averages 10 points a game.
In the first half, when the Blue Devils lost the lead, they were outrebounded, outhustled and even shot poor from the 3-point line.
The Hurricanes finished the first half going on a 14-4 run.
Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski went to the locker room at halftime not speaking to any of his players or assistant coaches. When the final buzzer sounded, and the Cameron Crazies gasped in disappointment, Krzyzewski left the court in the same fashion.

Wow
Mon, 02/06/2012 - 02:43 — mad_maxDuke had every opportunity to win this game and they just flat out choked it away. Heck, they missed like 6 or 7 straight FTs down the stretch, right?
When I've watched Duke play this year, I've noticed that they are not like the usual Duke teams we see. Something is missing...and I don't think it's just one Smith/Irving/Singler type of player. This Duke team lacks what we have grown used to seeing from Duke every year: discipline and mental strength. Too many times I've seen this team make a boneheaded play or take an ill-advised shot during a very critical possesion in the game. These guys are not playing smart basketball when it counts, and that has been one of Duke's biggest strengths over the years. If anyone can coach a team up, it's coach K, but it may be too late for this season. Let's see how things go Wednesday night.
Can't wait until the 2nd
Sun, 02/05/2012 - 22:39 — duke_blueCan't wait until the 2nd half to start being aggressive. Lack of ball handling experience at point and piss pour free throw shooting. They asked for this loss.
Kinda surprised
Sun, 02/05/2012 - 21:32 — JPDOhioKinda not.
Duke has a lot of good players, but no one like Nolan Smith who can pick them up and carry them when needed. They will finish the season ok, but any thought of a #1 seed can be banished.
Look for UNC by at least 10.
I think the fly in the
Mon, 02/06/2012 - 10:05 — unc098I think the fly in the ointment could be Curry. If Bullock doesn't stick to him like glue, and he goes off for 30-40 ( and he is capable of doing it ) it could be a long night. Tough half court defense, on the part of the Heels, will be the key. I believe this is going to be a 68-62 type of final.
Guards
Mon, 02/06/2012 - 12:14 — JPDOhioFor Duke to have a chance in this game, it's guards have to hit a lot of 3's. So, yes, perimeter defense will be the key for UNC.
Underneath, fugget about it. If you were choosing sides for a game of 3-on-3 with Henson, Zeller, Barnes, Kelly and the Plumlees, who would be the first 3 picked? Yeah, I thought so.
The only other way Duke has a chance is if UNC comes into this game overconfident and unfocused. If that were to happen, you guys would have a lot more to worry about than a loss on Wednesday.
Well if there is one game a
Mon, 02/06/2012 - 14:14 — unc098Well if there is one game a year that we don't have to worry about them getting up for its Duke!!!!.......State second....
You know that the Dukies are
Sun, 02/05/2012 - 23:33 — unc098You know that the Dukies are going to bring it. We shall see. Gotta shut down Rivers and the Heel's frontcourt has to dominate.
