Virginia returns a starting quarterback in Marc Verica, who threw for 2,037 yards last season, but the Cavaliers' secret weapon may be former starter Jameel Sewell, who sat out last season with academic issues.
Sewell is more mobile than Verica, which could make him the first option under new offensive coordinator Gregg Brandon, who was Urban Meyer's offensive coordinator at Bowling Green before taking over there for six year.
"He came in here with something to prove," Virginia offensive lineman Will Barker said. "He's a veteran senior leader on the offense and he has won some big games. He knows what it takes to win."
The Cavaliers also have Vic Hall, who spent most of last season at defensive back, in the QB mix, but Sewell's experience could give him the edge, particularly with the change in coordinators.
Sewell threw for 2,176 yards and a 12-9 TD-interception ratio in
2007, rushing for 279 yards and four TDs as well. Verica had a 8-16
ratio in 2008, with -71 yards rushing.
"They all have different styles and they all bring something different to the table," Barker said.
