Mulling the options

Bookmark and Share

So if Erik Cole and/or Tuomo Ruutu can’t play Thursday — and the bet here is that Ruutu is in and Cole is out — where does that leave the Hurricanes? Or, more to the point, who goes into the lineup?

The Hurricanes may not need Tim Conboy’s toughness as much in this series, so it’s more of a question than it was when Conboy replaced the flu-stricken Ryan Bayda against Boston.

“It depends on how we restructure the lines,” Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice said. “It’s not just the next guy in. We consider where Jokinen would go. Would he stay at center or go to the wing? That will affect who comes in. But we’ve got nine extra guys here, so we’re not going to be short of bodies.”

Here are Maurice’s options, if Cole OR Ruutu is out:

1. Conboy would be the default position after getting the call the last time a change was needed, but this series is moving at a faster pace than the Boston series, which means Conboy’s skating would be more of a detriment.

2. Dwight Helminen. In Game 5 of the New Jersey series, Helminen replaced Sergei Samsonov (“lower body” injury) and played sparingly. He’s a center, so he’d be the logical pick if Jokinen moves to the wing — likely, given how well the Samsonov-Rod Brind’Amour-Jokinen combination looked. Michael Ryan would be an option here as well, but Helminen appears ahead of Ryan on the depth chart.

3. Anton Babchuk. Maurice could dress seven defensemen, use Babchuk on the power play and double-shift Eric Staal or Matt Cullen with Bayda and Patrick Eaves.

4. Pat Dwyer. If Jokinen stays at center, Dwyer could fill in on the wing on the fourth line, with Eaves or Bayda moving up. He brings some speed and grit to the table, which could be useful against the Penguins.

5. A wild card. Maybe Brandon Sutter comes in to center the fourth line, giving the Canes another penalty-killer. Maybe Zach Boychuk or Drayson Bowman get the call, straight out of junior hockey. (The Canes apparently are NOT considering either as an option at this point, but I wouldn’t rule it out.) Maybe Bryan Rodney comes in as the seventh defenseman. In a situation like this, it’s worth exploring every possibility.

If Cole AND Ruutu are out, you’d have to figure Helminen is in to center the fourth line and either Dwyer, Conboy or Babchuk as well. The real gutsy play here would be to use Boychuk in a top-nine role, but again, the Canes don’t seem to be considering that.

Babs & Ryan

I'd like to see Babs get another shot (so to speak)... he was playing really well late in the season, but NJ had been burned and figured him out, apparently killing his confidence.

As others have said, it looks like PITT doesn't defend the point shot that well... it's worth playing him as a 7th D/PP option.

I posted on another thread about seeing M. Ryan back. He did a good job crashing the net, only to lose his job (and apparently his jersey number 36) to Jussi Jokinen in Phoenix.

who is the guy who played in

who is the guy who played in the san jose game he made the play that set up the second goal for samsonov

Michael Ryan!!!

Ha! I forgot about Michael Ryan! Heck, put in Sutter. I didn't think I'd see his name mentioned until August.

OR move Pitkanen to forward because he acts like one half the time anyway.

I agree with...

abramsdoug. Babchuk would be good for blasting from the point as it seems Pitt allows that more than Boston did. Boychuk should be the one!!! At least for ! game!

Staying safe....

I can't imagine a player without NHL experience would appear in a conference final, and against a star-powered team like the Pens. He'd be gripping his stick and watching his heros.
I envision Bayda getting the biggest bump in minutes.

Subs

If Ruutu can go, I'd bet on Helminen. He's seen a bit of first round action. If Ruutu and Cole are out then the safe choice would be Helminen and Conboy. My opinion would be to not bring Babchuk back unless Mo just wants to use him on the PP. Even then you have to think having 4 full lines of forwards would be better at this point. The Canes just finished two 7 games playoff series. Having more bodies to spread the load may save some energy if this series goes long. Other than the above mentioned players, no one else has seen any playoff game action, so I don't think throwing them into a pressure cooker cold would be wise. Just my 2 cents - tax!

Options

I am guessing that Ruutu will play. Given his threshold of pain, they'd probably have to cut off his leg before he wouldn't be there. I think Brandon Sutter would be my choice simply because he has great hockey sense and almost never is out of position. He also has excellent speed and quickness. I'd be very, very tempted to try Boychuk simply because he has such speed and grit -- he might well come out of nowhere and play a significant role. Boychuk also has the advantage that nobody on the Pens has played against him and they have no clue how quick he is.
