Really, should anyone be surprised the Hurricanes lost not one but two players in Game 1 of this series? It’s rare when they leave the ice at Mellon Arena with everyone intact.
At least three Hurricanes players have left the ice on a stretcher in Pittsburgh since the team moved to North Carolina in 1997, and that doesn’t include Erik Cole, who skated off the ice with a broken neck.
So losing Cole to a knee-to-knee hit by Matt Cooke and Tuomo Ruutu after he was tripped by Mark Eaton on Monday may have been unfortunate but hardly unexpected.
Even the one game Eric Staal has missed due to injury in his entire career was in Pittsburgh, back in the 2003-04 season.
Scott Walker has had a particularly rough time of it in this building. In October 2007, he tore cartilage in his ribs after an awkward hit by Jarkko Ruutu, an excruciatingly painful injury that knocked him out for 17 games.
Then, this January, he took a hit to the head from Matt Cooke and ended up missing two months with a concussion and post-concussion syndrome. All he can do is look wistfully across the street, where the steelwork for the Penguins’ new arena is going up.
“I think the Carolina Hurricanes will be the happiest people when they cut the ribbon on the new building,” Walker said. “We haven’t had much success here, injury-wise. It’s just the way it is, I guess. It’s just one of those things, Murphy’s law or whatever you want to call it.
“You think about it more because you think back to all the times people got hurt. There are a lot of buildings where guys have gotten hurt. It just happens some of our big ones have been in here lately.”
Here’s an attempt at a complete list of the serious injuries the Hurricanes have suffered on this ice:
April 4, 2000 — Rod Brind’Amour suffers a concussion after a hit by Bob Boughner.
October 18, 2000 — David Tanabe suffers a concussion and Kevin Hatcher badly bruises two fingers blocking a shot.
March 4, 2006 — Erik Cole fractures two vertebrae when he’s hit from behind by Brooks Orpik.
October 14, 2006 — Trevor Letowski leaves the ice on a stretcher after a blind-side hit by Colby Armstrong.
October 19, 2007 — Scott Walker tears cartilage in his chest after an awkward hit by Jarkko Ruutu.
December 5, 2008 — Frantisek Kaberle re-injures his foot when he’s hit with a shot.
January 20, 2009 — Scott Walker suffers a concussion when he’s blind-sided by Matt Cooke.

Kaberle?
Wed, 05/20/2009 - 21:33 — lightthelampI think you missed the boat there...there was no game on Dec. 5. If you are referring to the Dec. 4 game, that was at home. Which I guess was the case with the Laraque-Brindy incident last year - thought that was up there?
Nothing to do but look forward now. The time for payback is next year. We can win without playing dirty.

Wed, 05/20/2009 - 17:53 — canedoPens play pretty clean, Canes are going to have to learn to stay on their feet - quit whining and play - that's hockey - if you can't handle the Pens then good luck with the Redwings!

Wed, 05/20/2009 - 17:10 — LainiencWin tomorrow's game, games 3 & 4 at home and make game 5 the last time they need to visit that nightmare of an arena.
When are the pens getting a new building?
Wed, 05/20/2009 - 16:16 — hockeyhickmaybe they can still move to Kansas City. Since you already have the Chiefs, the Pens could be the Kansas City Squaws...
Nice thought..but they'll be filling the new arena shortly....
Wed, 05/20/2009 - 16:56 — Pensin6While the Canes struggle to get people to care.
Look at the latest numbers in the Turnkey Team Brand Index...Looks like your Canes are ranked right ahead of the Pirates who you've been making fun of on here.. Funny stuff!!

Oh right, I forgot; just
Wed, 05/20/2009 - 17:23 — acidqueenOh right, I forgot; just because the NHL doesn't market the crap out of our team, nobody cares about them.
At least Jim Balsillie didn't try to buy our team.
Hey Einstein...
Wed, 05/20/2009 - 17:18 — hockeyhickI am fully aware of your new digs. But you missed the joke about your "soft" team. You're sharp as a marble. I don't need to make fun of the Pirates-I have you!
Lemme ask you this: on what do they engrave your name for being 20th on the Turnkey Team Brand Index?
on your forehead....
Wed, 05/20/2009 - 23:46 — Pensin6I didn't miss your "joke"...You must think you'r funnier than the rest of us do.
My point is that the rest of the country is into the Pens. Merchandise, tickets... Outside of your "triangle" nobody cares if you move back to Hartford or not...
And for the genius who's great comeback was "At least Jim Basaille didn't try to buy us"... That was as dumb as they come.
Can't wait to see the excuses when you clowns are down 2-0.
Is it time
Wed, 05/20/2009 - 15:11 — Hockeydad92to turn the tables on the Pens? What would happen when a Cane slew foots Crosby, much less if he is hurt! I say the Canes just stick to their game plan, out hustle the Pens and let Cam rise to the occassion and we will be fine..
