Tim Gleason’s brow was still streaming sweat, with no signs of stopping, when he sat down at his locker after a long, tough practice Thursday.
“That’s what happens when you suck,” the Hurricanes defenseman said. “Go ahead and write that down.”
Still, that’s not what had him steaming — it was the consecutive home losses to Atlanta (5-2 on Sunday) and Washington (5-1 on Wednesday).
Although Gleason may not wear a letter for this team, he’s still part of the leadership group in the dressing room, and he had plenty to say about the team’s plight Thursday — plenty:
“Starting from myself, I was terrible,” Gleason said. “As a group, we have the character, we have the team in this locker room. There’s no excuses. We have none. We have pretty much a healthy lineup. We didn’t come prepared to play. That was a big game for us, a divisional game. I made a stupid play right off the bat and that hurt us. I know I have to be better.
“We have a lot of leaders in this room and we have to start leading. We have the guys to do it and it starts with me and I have no problem doing that. We do the talk, we’ve got to do the walk, pretty much. We have the guys in this room. We have the talent, we have guys that will work hard, we have the grinders, we have the players, we have the goaltending, we have the defense, the forwards.
“This team is built around a character type of atmosphere and environment. All 23 of us every day come to the rink. We’re all buddies in this room. There’s no excuses. We have the guys to do it. We have the determination in this room. There’s no excuse not to come out with two points. We went through a hard workout today which was well deserved because we stunk yesterday and we stunk (against) Atlanta.
“I could talk to you all night, all day about this, but we’ve got a chance to get two points tomorrow night and get things back rolling on a positive note and get a few wins under our belt.”
The Canes were still in the Eastern Conference’s top eight Thursday morning — just barely — but they’re on pace for 92 points, the same number that wasn’t good enough to get them into the playoffs last season.
And don’t think they don’t remember that.
“This is exactly what happened last year,” Gleason said. “We started off with a pretty good start and we stunk it up in November and December, and that’s what killed us in April. We don’t want to do that. There are signs of that coming right now and we’ve had a few games where we’ve kind of (given) away the points.
“It starts with myself and goes on up. I take all the blame in the world, especially for yesterday’s game. As a group, we have to contribute. Everybody has their own job to do and if we stick to our own jobs and be consistent in our own jobs, we’re going to be a heck of a team. There’s no reason for any changes around here because it’s a solid group. I’ve never been around a more solid group than this group.
“We have the guys in place, from the coaching staff on down. This is a tight-knit group and there are no excuses why we can’t move forward in a positive way, in a positive manner, and get the two points every night.”

Enough with the talk
Fri, 11/14/2008 - 10:14 — HockeydogGeneral comment
All season ( and since the Cup) we hear the same quotes.
Instead of telling us that you know you didn't put out the effort and that the "room' is full of character guys and leaders, please just put your collective money where your mouth is.
We are in the 3rd season of hearing about these character guys and nightly confessions about how you didn't show up that night but you can and will do better. Stop embarrassing yourselves in the media already with this broken record of "the right thing to say" after a crappy effort.
We the fans love you guys, and only ask that you play hard and let the results fall where they may. Truth is nobody likes to be a fan of a team that doesn't work hard, but everyone loves a lively bunch. If you can't bring it most every night ( we know you are humans and will have a bad night)re- evaluate your profession.
Tim Gleason
Ignore almost everything I wrote up there. You might make a mistake but you play hard and bring honesty to your comments to the public. YOU are the character guy this team needs to follow.
C's and A's
I agree Gleason needs a letter on his sweater!
Everyone looks at coaches and GM's as the leaders, but let's look at the player leaders too. Maybe it's time to reward those like Tim Gleason and take a letter off someone who is not speaking up in the right way or putting out the effort.
HIT baby HIT !
Fri, 11/14/2008 - 00:14 — ynotagainAs an earlier post stated, I don't want to just hear this talk. Yes the pansies played weak last night. Put a game plan together that involves HITTING. I want to see the Canes start hitting the OTHER guys, and slow down the Semin's, St. Louis's, etc. in the east. Hell we've been putting out the red carpet for these guys lately. And the goal keepers need to get their acts together FAST or be ready to be watching from the press box. I pay my hard earned $$ to by season tickets; I EXPECT to see my team show up and play hockey, NOT dancing with the stars on ice !
hit someone!!!!
Thu, 11/13/2008 - 18:39 — oldehawks18i really think if the canes dont hit semin HARD next time he comes to town he might score 5 goals.how can you let this guy just kill you every night and nobody (except sutter)even lays a finger on him.we are the softest defence in the league.i remember when we got seidenberg they said on cbc how soft he was,my god he is the toughest defenseman we have!
Tough talk doesn't win
Thu, 11/13/2008 - 18:10 — caneshockeyfanTough talk doesn't win hockey games.
Okay, so that was a little
Thu, 11/13/2008 - 18:12 — caneshockeyfanOkay, so that was a little blunt. It's good to know that Gleason, and presumably the rest of the team, are angry at themselves and ready for redemption. But, ask me how I feel about these comments in December.
Missed Playoffs, Well RESTED!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thu, 11/13/2008 - 17:05 — tcirilloGleason deserves the "A", NOW. Well said, but as pointed out, need results. A number of Canes said since missing the players last year they were well rested, WELL, "SHOW IT". I still think we need a SUPEWR star on this team, too many players getting paid solid money for being third and forth line guys. BRING IN GABORICK (even if it means spending some money or dumping some high salaried 3rd and 4th line guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Our forwards (except for Walker and Ruuto) look like crap. Caps have players that are 90% of their scoring every game. Control THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Especially Semin, Ovechkin is very good, but a little overrated. If not for Semin, this team would be average.
Go Canes!
Are you kidding?
Thu, 11/13/2008 - 19:18 — johnnymcqDid someone write "Ovechkin is very good, but a little overrated."?? Are you friggin' kidding me. Hide your ignorance...it's embarrassing.
The Canes problem is they do suck. They have 1 legitimate first liner with Williams out, 2 second liners and a collection of guys who should be on the third or fourth lines. Add in a few guys who shouldn't have advanced above the AHL and this is what you get.Â
Time for Rutherford to move on...he got lucky with the playoff matchups when we lost to Detroit in the final, and struck gold with the 06 team. Everything else has been an utter failure. He's got no room financially to bring in a scorer. If Staal doesn't get 40, Ruutu and Samsonov 30, this team will be playing golf come the playoffs. Does anyone think we're going to get 100 goals from those 3?
Gleason
Thu, 11/13/2008 - 16:59 — strangedakotaApparently Gleason is trying to cover his but on this one. I believe he is just trying to save his job. Everybody in the locker room know how bad they have played. Saying it is just covering tour but.
Please....
Thu, 11/13/2008 - 16:15 — Godman459I don't care what Gleason or anybody else says. Just because he says "we suck" doesn't make this terrible situation any better. I want to see results Gleason, not your obvious comments on this team that all of us already know. I thank whoever got the interview/comments, but this talk doesn't change a thing.
It's a start
Thu, 11/13/2008 - 17:03 — Puckin_awesomeI agree that they need to walk the walk, but his comments are a positive sign to the fact that some of the players are not content with mediocrity. His honesty is a far cry from the watered down statements we typically get, like "I think we could have played better. We put up a good fight, but things just didn't go our way". That's not an actual quote, but it's indicative of the players' responses to date. I'm encouraged to see Gleason taking some of the responsibility. Considering the fact that he's been having a decent year, his comments and self-blame should be respected.
Ultimately, like you said, the proof is in the pudding. We'll see tomorrow what it all means.
Indeed
Thu, 11/13/2008 - 19:14 — Godman459I think it's great that he is finally saying something besides what the other guys have said like you pointed out. I just don't think that even this honesty will get these guys playing better.
Like you said, we'll see tommorow....
Tim the A
Thu, 11/13/2008 - 16:07 — schelle92I totally agree with figaro. He deserves to have a letter on his chest..more so than some of the others. At least he has the balls to tell the world that he sucked. Now if he can just kick his teammates in the butt maybe they can get it going...finally.
Put an 'A' on this guy's
Thu, 11/13/2008 - 15:25 — figaroPut an 'A' on this guy's chest and let him go to work in the locker room. Refreshing to read this passion.
An A?
Thu, 11/13/2008 - 15:43 — rmmeliYou mean a C
Make it happen
Thu, 11/13/2008 - 15:01 — fourcornersThere's more life in Tim's interview than I've seen all season on the ice. Gleason can be a huge factor for this squad. I am looking forward to the actual implementation and hope it materializes.
