Did he say 'goober?'

Anyone who thought I was a bit harsh for begging the Hurricanes to deny the insufferable fans of Boston another title by beating the Bruins should consider the latest missive from the pied piper of Boston arrogance, Boston Globe columnist Dan Shaughnessy.

In addition to moving the RBC Center to "the campus of North Carolina State," great news for the university, Shaughnessy also refers to "the locals" as "what a bunch of goobers."

How novel. If the Hurricanes are in the playoffs, it must be time for redneck jokes and lazy hack jobs from people like Shaughnessy and Mitch "Moonshine and me" Albom. Shaughnessy left out Mayberry, or we would have had a winner in cliche bingo.

Even if the RBC Center's Jumbotron crew did make a mention of  Game 7 at the start of the third period — I only saw references to another miracle, although I wouldn't put it past them (see: Mexi-cam) — it's a pretty big leap from there to using a loaded term like "goobers."

(Funny how you didn't hear this kind of stuff when BC moved to the ACC. Everyone seemed awfully happy to hang around here then. No wonder Tom O'Brien fled Boston to come down here first chance he got.)

At least when Shaughnessy's colleague Bob Ryan ripped the atmosphere at the RBC Center, he just said he didn't think it was as loud as he had heard. He didn't say it was only loud if your ears were damaged from attending too many NASCAR races or something of the ilk.

Let's put this away once and for all: terms like "goober" and "redneck," when used by outsiders as insults, are racism disguised as elitism.

You think we're a bunch of uneducated, tobacco-chewing hicks? You're wrong, and we've heard it all before anyway. The only ignorance and laziness you expose is your own.

Just the facts

My thoughts
The Bs won game 1 too easily, largely due to game 7
hangover, not unusual. Games 2-4 the Canes were
much the faster team, the Bs looked like they were
skating in sand to me.
How do you beat speed ? Play physical. That's how
games 5-6 looked to me. Although when the Canes
has pressure, the Bs had difficulty clearing the defensive
zone - again team speed.
But generally, speed doesn't like being hit.
The Canes have been physical in return. Don't even
call Walker's punch anything but what it was - a
sucker punch. Rutherford sure is a good talker.
We saw a number of the current Canes up here
when they played with the local AHL team. You knew
Staal was going to be very good but Ward never
struck me as anymore than average. He looks better
to me now and stole a game for the Canes.
Good coaching or experience ?
I'm hoping for a very close game tonite. Let's call it
a 1-0 or 2-1 game and may the team that wants it
the most win, just keep the refs out of it, they are
awful, and keep it clean. Skating, passing, hitting.
Lastly, most of us up here stopped reading
'Shank' Shaughnessy a long time ago, lost
credibility. And when you lose that you'll say most
anything to get read.

Sadly ...

The refs have been involved in this series in a big way ...

Thanks ever so much, very

Thanks ever so much, very useful article. Kenali dan Kunjungi Objek Wisata di Pandeglang

Be a southern goober, Canes

Be a southern goober, Canes fans, and be proud.

Wear your Scott Walker jersey, if only because the No. 24 is the same number as Jeff Gordon's.

Eat the pulled pork at the RBC Center. It's incredible, by the way.

Bring cow bells, spit tobacco juice on the floor, fly the stars and bars, yell cuss words at refs, cheer icing and offside whistles.

Be proud we won the Cup in '06 because the Bruins haven't won since '72 with a lot more chances (since 1924) against a lot less teams.

Be proud of being from the south, who cares if you don't know icing from ice cream or cross checking from motocross. You don't have to have bad weather to like and learn about hockey.

Why do all these things? Because the Canes now have a tradition here in the south if anyone else in the NHL likes it or not.

Our team, Our tradition.

Almost a good read...but

Hey, the Bs have had more chances. True. No issue there. But what do you mean by saying "against a lot less teams"? You do realize that this means there was much stiffer competition. Only six teams. The best six goalies in the world (minus backups), the best 120 or so players in all of North America.

Oh, and Toronto as well as Montreal had the pick of the litter, since most players came from their regions. They were able to easily scout and sign players. Boston had the leftovers.

Wake up and learn the game's history. Maybe then you can speak intelligently about it.

By the way, the Bobby Orr signing for Boston was a coup. Toronto was furious when the Bs signed him out from under their noses.

But it didn't happen too often. Toronto and Montreal lorded over the hockey universe in those days.

More of the same

First, that wasn't as big a blast as I was expecting. Thanks for showing some class.

But ...

"Wake up and learn the game's history. Maybe then you can speak intelligently about it. "

It's the old same attitude from fans that think because we aren't from Canada or somewhere where our lakes freeze over, that we have no right to a team, and can't understand or appreciate what we are watching.

What's to understand for a novice fan? Put the puck in the net more times than the other team is the bottom line, right?Put the biscuit in the basket, right? The rest - and I am sure 99% of the fans at the RBC Center know more than just that - is just measuring your you-know-what against some one else's. There is nothing wrong with that, really, just don't presume to know what we know or don't know.

It's like that old my-favorite-thing-is-cooler-because-you-have-never-heard-of-it attitude, and once you have heard of it, it's not as cool. It really makes no sense. Most true hockey fans want the sport to grow, right?

I was merely trying to point out that it doesn't matter and it doesn't make us inferior fans because we aren't from a region that plays a lot of hockey. However, Raleigh should be proud of the 10 years of tradition we have established.

As far as the against less teams goes, it was admitidly a stretch because I realize the player pool, among other things, favored certain teams. I think it still does to this day in all sports.

But if you go back to basic statistics - see score more goals than the other team - a 1/6 shot with the best players in North America (and your team had 1/6 of the best players, too) is better than a 1/30 shot against the best players in the world. Again, I know that doesn't quite add up for a lot of reasons. It was simply a way of measuring the Bruins long tradition against our very short one. But it is a tradition and it does deserve respect.

One other thing, if you aren't from here you may not know what this region is like in terms of sports. We have four of the best college basketball teams in the country within 100 miles of here. It divides this area among them. The Canes unite this area and that is an unprecedented tradition. That is a pretty cool thing and I'd like to share that with all fans of the NHL.

Win or lose tonight, thanks Canes!

Our team. Our tradition.

Really?

Really? I thought that the magnolias were made of steel down south? Then again, when you've got a carpetbagger from the Land of Lincoln defending Southern Pride, things may tend to get a bit squirrelly. Hey, DeCock, go back to Evanston, get a deep dish from Gino's and let your adopted neighbors defend their heritage on their own. They might not use that fancy verbiage of yours, but it'll at least be authentic. Who knows they may not have even gotten their wee little knickers in a bundle like you did, then again I doubt your readers are suburban middle class twits, so their mettle may be a bit stronger. Now run along and break out your Michael Jordan memorabilia as you know absolutely nothing about the game of Hockey.

As a native North Carolinian

As a native North Carolinian that has traveled a bit around the country I am tired of the hillbilly, hick, goober, whatever names.
The worst for me is the mocking such as where are you all from in the slowest insulting way possible. This type of thing is very insulting and I think the writer for pointing it out. Those or you who have not had to put up with this all your life can never know what it's like. You can only say don't be so sensitive or what's the big deal. Now let's kick some Boston Bruin ass tonight!

unbelivable

Are you serious in your assertion that goober and redneck are worthy of a racial slur classification? These type of ridiculous statements lend creedence to your ignorant country bumpkin persona. The past two articles that you have written do not distinguish yourself and your fellow carolina fan-base from shaughnessy and Ryan. I understand that you write to create controversy and draw attention to your writing because you are in such a small market, but saying that goober and redneck are comparable to other racial slurs borders on absurd. Your journalistic integrity has certainly suffered in exchange for your feeble attempt to gain national exposure. Many of the Boston fans, myself included, will not feel remorse for you and your fellow Carolina fans as we complete a historic comeback and whomp your silly goober redneck asses back to Raleigh.

The Irish Moron Twins of Boston

Okay, perhaps they aren't twins, but Shaughnessey and Ryan both need to get a grip on reality. First off, the number of transplanted northerners who are avid Canes fans down here should scare them to death. Afterall, these are the people who were smart enough to trade up on quality of life and get out of places like Boston. I've been following the NHL since 1966, and I can nearly guarantee that I forgot more about pro hockey than the moron twins will ever know. Understandably, they are proud of the Bruins legacy in hockey, as they should be. But, taking cheap shots on a rising area for pro hockey should be beneath these guys...but, apparently not. I guess, their overall lack of hockey knowledge needed to focus on something other than the series itself. So why not take some shots at the Carolina locals who cheer their team win or lose, many of whom use to be Ranger, Islander, and even Bruin fans. And speaking of win or lose. I wonder what Shaughnessey and Ryan were doing in 2006 during the Stanley Cup Finals. Probably at O'Malleys Bar tossing a few down, trying to forget about the Bruins fiasco season and ignoring one of the great Stanley Cup game sevens ever being played right down here in "gooberville". At best, Shaugnessey and Ryan showed just how inept they are at their jobs. At worst, they displayed the same sort of elitism that typifies many New Englanders who just don't seem to know any better. If they had any brains, they would trade up....for better weather, lower taxes, and an improved atmosphere to watch pro hockey.

sensitive Cane fans

" "We have won one Game 7 and we will win another." Swell. What a bunch of goobers. Imagine playing at your own rink and seeing a message that basically states that the game you are playing is already over." He is calling the folks who put that up on the jumbo goobers, not all of "cane nation". Little sensitive aren't we? Could it be the fear creeping in?

goobers

We'll see you cubbies tomorrow...may the best team win...and yeah, you will wish you had Cam Ward after tomorrow's game because he will be the difference...Thomas will be exposed...Unless the B's succeed in putting 3 in front of him to block all of his shots...welcome to world class goal keeping..

Shaughnessy

I lived in MA 18 years before I moved to NC. When I first moved to MA, Shaughnessy was fresh and witty. I used to look forward to reading him in the Globe. The problem is, his writing in 2009 is pretty much the same as it was in the 80's. One of his standards is to find these little side issues to pick on. He isn't a hockey beat writer who really understands the game.

Beautiful, Simply Beautiful

Luke, Saying what needed to be said with wit, dignity, and style. A journalist hat-trick if you will.

Shank being Shank

Ignore Shank. He has no clue what he is talking about. He only decided to write about the Bruins now since they're in the second round and Bob Ryan got dibs on the Celtics. This is the same guy who thought UConn wasn't part of New England and thought people in Hartford cared about the Canes. The Boston Globe rarely if ever talks about hockey or college sports unless they want to degrade someone. Their more focused on the Celtics and the Sox (they do own 17% of the team).

refs chant

Actually at most NHL rinks they just chant "Bull Sh!t".

Too personal?

Luke & Others -- c'mon, you're taking this too hard. Although I have lived in the South for most of my life, I have spent many years in the Northeast and still have many friends who are died-in-the-wool Yanks. Just about everyone up there is from flinty stock and they consider trading barbs to be a fine art. We can't wear our hearts on our sleeves; we look like silly delicate flowers when we do.

Consider this: If the Canes weren't such a threat and the fans a factor in these games, they wouldn't even bother with the insults. Consider the jabs and wisecracks as badges of honor and thicken the skin a bit.

Let's clear some things up

As a guy who has lived in Boston his whole life, I feel some things need to be cleared up.

- Shaughnessy and Ryan write for the Globe. The Globe is such a horrible, one-sided newspaper that the New York Times company nearly shut it down. No self-respecting Bostonian would read the Globe (the Herald barely does any justice either with it's usual *half page* of Bruins coverage), and asserting that we do is much more hurtful than being labelled a 'hick'.

- Unfortunately Massachusetts is liberal so we get murdering alcoholic scumbags like the Kennedys, morons like Kerry and people as responsible for the economic disaster like Barney Frank re-elected every year. Unfortunately the liberal yuppies keep re-electing them, but you usually only see them at Red Sox games getting people kicked out for wearing Yankees Suck shirts.

- You guys need to learn how to take jokes. It's alright for you guys in the RBC center to do horrible Boston accents that sound more like New Yorkers (again, big insult), but if we say something like start the tractors the games about to end, it's like we make you sit at the back of the bus.

Get real.

Ugh MA

Unfortunatly I still have the pleasure of living here (Live in Tewksbury. Go to UMass Amherst). Few people in MA take the Globe seriously anymore since the New York Times gutted the paper and almost shut it down.  The Sports section is a joke now, especially when it comes to college sports. The only redeeming factor is I get to see the Heels in person when they come up to the Heights.

Re: Ugh MA

Glutton for punishment right?

Massachusetts

Sounds like a wonderful place to live.

At a loss

I was going to take a shot at the Bruins fans but after reading some of other comments this has gotten so ridiculous I feel it's pointless; honestly, how can I add to pig farmers, nascar, dumb New Englanders, and so on. Tomorrow night should be good, glad it's an 8PM start. I think tomorrow's key will be not who scores the first goal but who scores the second, apart from game 3 no one's made a comeback.

Perfect

Amen, Luke. Well said.
I still hate Mitch Albom and vow to never read one word of his trite little "death" books because of all that "Moonshine" nonsense from a few years back.

Goober comment is out of line

You are right for taking umbrage with Boston's 4th estate. I did read where the 'Canes attendance was higher, on average, than the Bruins. Of course, The Bs don't have tractor pulls after each home game, either.

Terrible

Have only starting reading this guy since this series started, but he's awful.  Is he always such a suck up?

Wow

For a guy who thought a player getting away with a blatant sucker punch was the greatest thing ever, DeCock sure is sensitive. You're gonna pull the race card out on a word as innocuous as goober? Seems like that should be used with a little more restraint. And posting 'we will win Game 7' on the scoreboard with 20 minutes to go in Game 6 and only trailing by 3 deserves belittling. Would dumb-dumbs be less offensive?

Well, Actually...

Luke, you do a great job covering the Canes, and Shaughnessy indeed is hacktastic... but for Mayberry cliches, one need look no further than your June 20, 2006 Page 1 story about the Hurricanes' Stanley Cup win.

Mayberry

Well, that was kind of the point, wasn't it? (Just like the "Shazam!" headline after Game 1 of the '02 finals.) If the sarcasm was too subtle, the line about "eat your heart out, Canada" ought to underline it.

You're a One Way Street, DeCock.

Can dish but can't take (by the way, I do agree with you on this one).

But, I've got to tell you, I've seen thicker skin on pudding.

consider the source...

There really is no need to get upset about the Boston folks calling us Canes fans names.  Consider for a moment these are the same people who elect Ted Kennedy and Barney Frank as their "leaders" year after year after year. They obviously are completely clueless.

We have a great hockey team.  Anyone who underestimates them does so at their own peril, as NJ will attest.  Go Canes, and thanks for a great season!

leaders like.....

Jesse Helms and John Edwards were your wonderful contributions.

Quit your crying!

The Bruins will do their talking on the ice! Oh Luke, quit your bi*chin, and take your Camaro out for a spin. Don't you got to get back to the ranch and feed them pigs! It all be over soon but the crying Scarolina!

I don't think you call a

I don't think you call a farm with pigs a ranch, that would pig farm.

Also it is customary to have a pick-up truck on a farm not a Camero. Just FYI

I can testify that a lot of

I can testify that a lot of fans at Canes' games are goobers and rednecks that don't know a thing about hockey.

Also, Tripp Tracy is a horrible color commentator.

Yes, continue acting your

Yes, continue acting your mental age of 12 and rehash the same overused, ignorant blanket statements to try and insult us.

But answer me this, "woodchip," if Boston is full of real hockey fans, why is it that the Canes have averaged better attendance than the Bruins since 2002? Seems we have more fans than your original six team.

How do you like 'dem apples?

By stating my fact; how did

By stating my fact; how did I act like a 12yr old? .. how was it a blanket statement? .. and how did I try try to insult a group of people?

Furthermore, where did I say Boston was full of real hockey fans?  Also, where did I say Boston was my team?

I think you like your apples filled with pulled pork.

Try not to get so defensive next time as so not to have your head straight up your.... - well, I think you're smart enough to know the rest.

I agree with your statement

I agree with your statement about Tripp Tracy but isn't him from the Boston area originally???

If he was, does this

If he was, does this matter?

I know he went to Harvard and tries to insert/relate his elite goaltending experience at every chance in his color commentating.

Shaughnessy is a bigger A-hole than any Carolina fan

No one reads him up here anyway, and the paper he works for is going to fold (literally), so anything that f-tard writes is garbage.

He wrote a book about how great his kid is in baseball.(seriously, the kid is in HS,that's how big a tool he is.) By the way, HS= 'High School' because we all know that below the Mason-Dixon, schools only go to the 6th grade.

Was in the same bar he was in before a B's game a few months ago and every minute on the minute someone would walk by and call him an a-hole.

The only reason he called you "goobers" is because he couldn't think of anything funnier. He could have said, The tailgating at the RBC Ctr., looked like fun but I had no idea they had enough room for 10,000 combines.

Go B's.

You reek of ignorance and

You reek of ignorance and arrogance. Clean yourself off.

Shaughnessy

Up here in Boston, we all think he is a hack whose relevence has long passed. Ryan, however, is a treasure.

That being said, Canes have no shot tomorrow night.

Ok, we have not

Ok, we have not chance.

Turn the plane around Canes, Boston will be on the Ice so there is no reason to even show up, the apperently won it allready.  After all they have Bobby Orr retired jersey in the stands and we are not deserving since we fluked into the playoffs. . . .

Got lucky beating New Jersey and only beat the Bruins 3 game this series since they did not play well, nothing the canes did.

Put the tailgating equipment away as the chance to win 1 game there is 0 %.  We give up there is no way we could ever win, you got us!

New Jersey gift wrapped

New Jersey gift wrapped that series for the Canes, consider them lucky.

As for the Bruins, it's not so much that the Canes are so good that they beat the Bruins three game (in a row).  It was that the Bruins got into a funk and Carolina was good enough to take advantage.

Bruins will win tomorrow night.

Two words:

Jesse. Helms.

nuff said.

Ted Kennedy Murdered a

Ted Kennedy

Murdered a young girl, then the state of MA. covers it up and lets him get away with it because of his name.

Wow. Just wow. Way to

Wow. Just wow. Way to perpetuate the seemingly unending illogicial and prejudicial comments coming from your fanbase. Keep it up, seriously, because all you are doing is embarassing yourself and your fanbase. But wait. That's right, you're nothing more than the typical Boston bandwagon fan. You're a disgrace to REAL Bruins fans. Get lost.

Goobers?

Hey, don't take anything Big Dan says personally. He's the biggest bandwagon guy around -- sometimes you think he WANTS bad things to happen in Boston sports so he can beat up on athletes. Trust me, we don't like him much up here, either.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHAAAA

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWW!!!!!!!!!

LET'S GIT 'ER DONE!!!

Who cares...

Who cares! Lets get back to the game. I could care less what anyone calls this Raleigh native.
Go Canes!

And by the way, I have never watched Nascar in my life so that stereotype is way off.

That's because...

You're too busy listening to it on AM radio.
