Arena music, one man's opinion

Tags: Hurricanes

In the wake of last week's complaint about the music at the RBC Center, I requested the assistance of Superchunk front man, Merge Records founder and diehard Hurricanes fan Mac McCaughan, the official musician of the former Lord Stanley's Blog.

In 2006, McCaughan dropped off a Merge compliation and the arena's Jumbotron crew actually played a few songs off it during the playoffs. This time around, I asked McCaughan what his hockey playlist would be.

A few of his choices are on the RBC Center's list, but he has some novel ones as well.

He modestly omitted any Superchunk songs, but both Hyper Enough and Punch Me Harder are natural additions to his list. Feel free to add your own suggestions for Game 6 as comments.

The Stooges - Search and Destroy
Metallica - Seek and Destroy
Soft Boys - I Wanna Destroy You
Mastodon - Crusher Destroyer
Cheap Trick - Hello There
AC/DC - If You Want Blood
James Carr - Gonna Send You Back to Georgia (mainly when playing the Thrashers of course)
Jay Reatard - Blood Visions, Night of Broken Glass
Spoon - Car Radio, Jonathon Fisk, My Mathematical Mind, Turn My Camera On
Titus Andronicus - Titus Andronicus
Black Sabbath - War Pigs (specifically the verse), Iron Man (for Rod Brind'Amour or Eric Staal)
DOA - The Enemy (bonus points for being Canadian!)
Pat Travers Band - Boom Boom Out Go the Lights (don't actually love this song, just seems like a song to play after a big hit)
Santogold - Lights Out
Arcade Fire - Wake Up, Power Out
XTC - Reign of Blows
Allen Toussaint - Last Train (towards the end of 3rd period, esp if Canes are winning)
Flaming Groovies - Shakin' All Over (the Who's version would work too...)
Aretha Franklin - When the Battle Is Over
Petey Pablo - Raise Up (Seriously, have they ever played this? It's only the most appropriate anthem for an NC sports team...perhaps too much attention is paid to posters on canes msg boards who's main concern when it comes to music for the RBC Center is "NO RAP!" though i hope not) Need to find a radio edit of that one! — ed.
Public Enemy - Welcome to the Terrordome
Springsteen - The Rising worked in '06, but I'm tired of it, how about No Surrender?
Martha Reeves and the Vandellas - Full Speed Ahead
Creedence - Up Around the Bend
Devo - Working in a Coal Mine, Satisfaction
New Pornographers - The Electric Version, Mass Romantic
The Reigning Sound - Straight Shooter
Rolling Stones - Rip This Joint
Elton John - Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting
Elvis Costello & the Attractions - I Can't Stand Up for Falling Down
Paul McCartney & Wings - Live and Let Die
Guided By Voices - Glad Girls (certainly the Jumbotron operator can find something to do here)
Jr Walker & the All Stars - Home Cookin', Shotgun
Les Savy Fav - Pots and Pans
