Triangle gas prices: better, but worst

Bookmark and Share

A month later, Hurricane Ike is a distant memory --  except here. Crude oil prices are plunging. But we're still paying through the nose for gas:

- The Triangle has the most expensive gas in North Carolina (an average $3.617 for regular as of Monday, after falling 27 cents in the past month). [Updated 7:30 am Monday.]

- North Carolina still has the most expensive gas in the 48 states east of Alaska and Hawaii ($3.502, 36 cents lower than a month ago).

- Dragged lower by tumbling crude oil prices, the average U.S. retail price for regular gas has fallen 53 cents in the past month (now at $3.206, according to fuelgaugereport.com).

In some states, the average has fallen below $3. Even in North Carolina, you can find gas below $2.80 in Elizabeth City, below $3.10 around Mebane and Burlington, below $3.40 in Hillsborough.

Have supply-and-demand laws been suspended -- only in the Triangle?

There are angry theories about the role of gouging and the burden of taxes, but they surely do not  explain the Triangle's situation. Our gas tax is close to the national average, and it's hard to believe we're suddenly the nation's chart-toppers in the greed category.

In the first days after Ike squeezed our pipelines shut in mid-September, Asheville was slammed with a severe gas drought that produced long lines, short tempers and high prices. Then Charlotte had the worst of it. Prices were highest in Western NC.

Supposedly, the pipeline was back at 100 percent almost a week ago.  Now supplies have increased and prices have fallen sharply west of us. But not here.

Triangle drivers never ran out of gas at the worst of it. But now, we still find some stations with yellow plastic bags on their empty pumps -- especially for premium.

What's your theory?

Deeper Than We Thought, Maybe.

Since I moved here from the mountains of VA, the most obvious thing I noticed about the Triangle area is the excess of gas guzzlers here. I can not believe how few gas sippers are here. There are several hybrids that can handle high volumn loads now too. But, I don't see too many driven here.
Easley and Cooper may be keeping a blind eye to these prices because in time more of gas guzzler folks may buy more sippers. These guzzlers are just as expensive as sippers.
But, at the same time, EVERYONE is suffering in the short run in these hard economic times with severe gas price gouging on a DAILY basis! Not everyone in this area has enough money to make it and these folks are doing desperate risky things.
I hope the Governor will address these gas prices soon
After Ike, on the radio Easley asked us to report these gas price gouging stations. Where do we report them now

Gas Prices

Gas is cheap over here in Elizabeth City. $2.77 in several places, and plenty of it.

Goverment Intervention

Do we really want even bigger government?

Alot of people talk about how the President or Government should step in and do something about fuel prices. They cannot, and should not, be able to control pricing of fuel.

Something the governments could do about fuel is reduce national speed limits to 55 MPH. This would force motorists to drive at more efficient speeds thus reducing fuel consumption. I believe that when faced with this option, many people would start saying the government shouldn't be able to infringe on our ability to drive 65 or even 70 MPH.

As an added side benefit, local goverment would be able to increase ticket revenuse from an increase in speeding tickets. Perhaps that money could go towards increasing our law enforcement personnel's wages.

Have you ever told an employer they are paying you too much?

Frankly, I'm surprised fuel is so inexpensive right now. When selling a product, the general idea is to find a price that brings the most profit while still maintaining demand. If there is less fuel, it should cost more. Look at the price of gold. Is that price gouging? The cost of gold has been going up for a very long time as the mining of new gold is becoming more and more costly. Many other countries are paying double or triple relative to what we pay right now so I'm just happy to be in America.

Roy Cooper

Attn. General Roy Cooper must think his job is absolutely safe in an election tear. He just lost mine.

Ethridge payback

Bob Ethridge sponsered a bill in the house to punish oil speculators. Could this be payback?

Come Back Pat Stith!

Where's Pat when we really need him for answers to these questions? Maybe he could get the Attorney General more motivated to address this.

Our neighbor, Burlington is much cheaper

Gas in Burlington was $3.09 this evening on our way back from Charlotte. What gives, Triangle?

Gas Prices

Gas prices in Wilkesboro and North Wilkesboro have recently dropped from 3.99 to 3.89 and then to 3.79. Our gas prices are always more expensive than nearby places like Elkin.  I sure hope that some station here drops its price to the triangle average of 3.66 and then lower.

Ha.. you all are quite

Ha.. you all are quite lucky. Here, gas in Chicago at alot of the stations have been higher then that. Last I checked, It was still real close to $4 though, it was significantly higher in weeks before.. nearing $5, it has certainly dropped. But when I drive an hour one way and find it under $3, but stay where I am and see it being 75 cents higher atleast, that just doesnt explain much. Though the Premiun Gas I see quite often being empty. I have no clue what so ever on why that is, but it is. Here in the Chicago-land area, I see alot of the stations only have the low-grade fuel. and I know Chicago was not hit with Ike. I dont get it.

OK city gas

Oklahoma city, gas is $2.29 gallon! So We are paying over 50% more than they are. We need a new State Attorney General, or one that does his/her job and works to protect the consumer.

gas prices

Drive to New Bern, you will get gouged here as well! You can leave New Bern and drive any direction and find it much cheaper. My parents live in Elizabeth City and gas their today is 2.75 per gallon. 3.47 in NB

Just over the line in TN

I just drove back into NC from over the line in Tennessee. Gas there was selling for $2.95 per gallon. Cars apparently had driven across the state line to save about 75 cents per gallon compared to NC.

Gas Prices

Gas here in Michigan is $2.79 per gallon. Our unemployment is worse.

The simple matter is that

The simple matter is that they are all in cahoots with each other and they will keep doing it to us till we start taking notice of it too the parasites in raleigh.

Anti Monoply

It seems its the small private non branded stations being sqeezed of supply. This is the large branded oil companies trying to push them out of business. The effect is fewer stations with gas equals lower supply and thus higher prices. This smacks of price fixing and monoplistic practises. NC Att Gen Wake up and put and end to this.

Gas prices

It is price gouging. It couldn't be more obvious and I believe it is the individual service station. This sat., 11th. I drove from Southern Alabama through Georgia, South Carolina to the Triangle in NC. Within miles, same brand service stations would vary from 3.09 to 3.67 all the way. Two stations were 2.99 for cash. Diesel hardly varied. As for our area staying high? Because this is a most affluent area and the service stations take advantage of that and hurt the working family. Shame. Why doesn't the Governor do something?

Gas Prices Too High!

When I go home to SC once a month I typically find gas to be $.20 cheaper a gallon. Now that the Triangle is higher than anywhere else gas is even cheaper in SC. Why do these stores keep over charging us? Because they know that as much as we drive (and not carpool) we will pay for the gas because we have to have it. If we would start carpooling seriously and conserving our gas we could reduce our dependence and show these store owners a thing or two.

Gas Prices

Folks, Let's call a spade a spade! At the level a barrel of crude is currently at.....the price of a gallon of Gasoline should be below 3 dollars a gallon, your congressmen and senators know this....but they remain silent for fear of no support from the big boys come campaign time. Until someone comes along who is willing to tell it like it is....things will never change, and we will keep getting fleeced by the very same system we fought the American Revolution not to have in place. Taxation without representation is alive and well in the USA!

Gas Prices, up like a rocket ,down like a feather

Gas Price goes up immediately with oil and go down every so slowly as oil declines in price.
The slowness is the fact that refiners, but primarily distributors, and some gas stations maximize profit and delay passing on the lower prices until the last possible moment.

Greed - pure and simple

Unleaded gas is trading on the Chicago Board of Trade for $1.81/gal which equates to a 100% markup. My parents tell me, in the Midwest, they're paying $2.66 to $2.79 - that's a $1 less or $25-30 per fill-up. I absolutely agree Cooper should be investigating what the heck is going on!

Criminal Intent! They are all thieves, plain and simple!

Not a theory, a fact!

I am writing this from The Fuel City gas station near Mebane. $3.19/gallon. The only explanation for the $3.79-$3.99 in Durham is that they think we are too stupid to realize they are artificially keeping the price high to gouge us. Not a few cents, more like $10-$12 PER FILLUP. Where is Cooper when we need him? Contrived shortage to make it look like they are out.

Well, Yes... theyy are

Well, Yes... theyy are gouging us with the price, but you also have to take into account that the stations also haev to pay for the gas too.  They may not be able to afford way too much too.  though it depends on the stations and who owns them I think.    but still.. having the Triangle area with such high gas compared to teh rest, when a town over is nearly a dollar less, piff, just drive the distance to them and let the triangle's demand fall and HOPEFULLY, lower its price in return to bring back its fuel guzlers.
