Crosstown Traffic

Crosstown Traffic is all about getting around in the Triangle. Bad drivers and traffic hassles. Gas taxes and transportation politics. Public transit and other auto alternatives.

The blog is maintained by N&O transportation reporter Bruce Siceloff, whose Road Worrier column is published each Tuesday.

This traffic is two-way. What do you think? Leave a comment or email Bruce with questions, links, tips or gripes.

SuperShuttle adds options for getting to RDU and back

If the taxi is too pricey and your roommate can't pick you up at the airport, a shared-ride van service offers RDU travelers a new option.

RDU last month became the 24th airport with shared-van service provided by SuperShuttle International. You can meet the shuttle at the curb or book reservations online. Your fare quote is based on the ZIP code of your destination (or origin, if you're going to the airport).

It appears that the shuttle is cheaper for solo travelers. But two or three folks sharing a ride still might do better flagging a cab for some airport trips.

David Ranii's Nov. 19 N&O story explains the idea. Here are an RDU announcement and an N&O update.

Is it a good deal for you?

Mindy Hamlin of RDU offers sample fares provided by SuperShuttle, compared with these taxi fares from RDU's website:

* RDU to Raleigh Convention Center, 14 miles: $29.80 for a taxi with one or more riders, $16 per person by SuperShuttle.

* RDU to downtown Durham, 14 miles: $29.80 for a taxi with one or more riders, $20 per person by SuperShuttle.

* RDU to downtown Chapel Hill, 18 miles: $37.60 for a taxi with one or more riders, $25 per person by SuperShuttle.

Book a roundtrip ride with SuperShuttle, Hamlin says, and the fare is discounted: $46 for Chapel Hill.
