Crosstown Traffic is all about getting around in the Triangle. Bad drivers and traffic hassles. Gas taxes and transportation politics. Public transit and other auto alternatives.
The blog is maintained by N&O transportation reporter Bruce Siceloff, whose Road Worrier column is published each Tuesday.
This traffic is two-way. What do you think? Leave a comment or email Bruce with questions, links, tips or gripes.
Two Durham cyclists, Pablo Torres and his girlfriend Gabrielle Trapenberg, are raising money for their upcoming Climate Ride, a 300-mile roll from New York to Washington, D.C. They call themselves Latinos por el planeta.
Pablo says he and Gabi are the only two North Carolinians scheduled to join cyclists from across the United States on the five-day bike trip, Sept. 26-30, which is a fund-raiser and a "climate conference on wheels:"
Along the way, expert speakers will educate and inspire Climate Riders and local communities about the science, the policies and the solutions to global warming. Participants will meet knowledgeable renewable energy experts, climate activists, scientists, and leaders committed to making a difference. The ride will finish at the steps of the U.S. Capitol, where riders will have the opportunity to meet with the nation’s government leaders and make a powerful statement about the need for renewable energy and climate change legislation.
They have a lot of training to do, and a lot of money to raise.
Participants are required to raise $2,400 per person to benefit Focus the Nation, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy and Clean Air – Cool Planet, and their climate, energy and alternative transportation projects.
They have two fund-raising events scheduled: An 80s vs. 90s dance party at Tallula's in Chapel Hill, 10 pm on Aug. 29, and a silent auction at the West End Wine Bar in Durham 5-8 pm Sept. 3.
Donations are tax-deductible. You can give online at www.climateride.org -> Donations -> Give to a team (search for Latinos por el planeta). Or contact Pablo and Gabi directly: gabitrap@gmail.com or (919) 548-3619.

Post-ride video
Sun, 10/18/2009 - 20:45 — ptorresbGabrielle and I recently returned from the 2009 Climate Ride (www.climateride.org), bicycling from NYC to DC to raise money and promote climate change awareness and renewable energy.
It was a wonderful experience, and educational and inspiring journey that started long before the ride - check out this video we created of our journey: http://vimeo.com/7010901 (12 mins, incl. audio).
I encourage Triangle cyclists to participate in the 2010 Climate Ride (visit www.climateride.org for more info). It is an experience you will never forget.
The motifs behind
Wed, 08/12/2009 - 20:19 — ptorresbThank you Bruce! And thank you to those reading the article. Gabi and I are excited about this ride. In addition to what you have mentioned, we want to raise awareness about the impact that fossil fuels, energy use, urban growth and American consumerism are having on climate change and the depletion of natural resources. I think now is a critical moment to make a transition towards a renewable energy-based economy, which will reduce our reliance on foreign oil and invest american dollars into our economy instead of sending dollars overseas to support petrodictatorships, to use Thomas Friedman's words. America can mitigate climate change, limit the depletion of natural resources, and become a world leader in the green energy industry (we are already far behind countries like China, Germany, Japan and Denmark and have a lot of catching up to do). On a separate note, promoting alternative transportation, such as the use of bicycles, is key to making americans healthier, thus reducing the burden on our healthcare system.
I'd love to hear from other cyclists with similar concerns for the issues raised above. And last but not least, if you can afford even the smallest amount, please help Gabi and I reach our fundraising goal, either through a donation or by stopping by our events at Tallulas and the West End Wine Bar. Thanks!
