Crosstown Traffic

Crosstown Traffic

Crosstown Traffic is all about getting around in the Triangle. Bad drivers and traffic hassles. Gas taxes and transportation politics. Public transit and other auto alternatives.

The blog is maintained by N&O transportation reporter Bruce Siceloff, whose Road Worrier column is published each Tuesday.

This traffic is two-way. What do you think? Leave a comment or email Bruce with questions, links, tips or gripes.

DOT work will squeeze I-40 in West Raleigh, starting tonight

Bookmark and Share

Westbound I-40 in West Raleigh will be squeezed into a single lane at night, starting tonight, as NCDOT begins a project to widen a 6-mile stretch of I-40 from four to six lanes.

Tonight's work starts near the Jones Franklin Road overpass at the eastern end of the project, and moves west toward Wade Avenue. The work will continue at night from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m. weekdays, until 9 a.m. Saturdays and until 10 a.m. Sundays.

The contractor is installing barriers on the grassy median, where most of the work will take place. While the barriers are being installed, the left or inner lane of westbound I-40 will be closed. The project is to be completed in June 2011.

You can check traffic conditions on the I-40 project online at or by dialing 511.

RE: NEW CONSTRUCTION OF I-40 TO SIX LANES

I FEAR THAT THIS TO WILL IN ALL PROBABLITY END UP JUST BEING ANOTHER SCREWED UP NEWLY CONSTRUCTED SECTION OF I-40 FOR IN ALL LIKELYHOOD AN THAT SCREWED UP PROJECTS OF THIS NATURE WILL UTLIMATELY CONTINUE TO HAPPEN UNTIL SUCH TIME AS THAT THE NCDOT ONCE AGAIN BEGINS TO ALLOW STATE HIRED STATE INSPECTORS TO RETURN TO THE DAYS OF YESTERYEARS WHEN STATE INSPECTORS WERE ACTUALLY ALLOWED TO DO THEIR JOBS AN THAT BEING THE ENFORCEMENT OF THE NCDOT STATE HIGHWAY SPECEFICIATIONS FOR ROADS & BRIDGES.AN UNTIL SUCH TIME AS THAT THIS EVENT TAKES PLACE I FEAR THAT YOU WILL CONTINUE TO SEE BAD ROADWAY CONSTRUCTION BY THIS STATES HIGHWAY CONTRACTORS WITH CONTINUED FAILING PAVEMENTS AN JUST BAD ROADWAY CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS TAKING PLACE IN GENERAL

ALL CAPS hard to read ..

Thanks for your thoughts, beachbum3.  If you would disengage the CAPS LOCK key next time, your words would be easier to read.
