View I-40 / Wade Ave Bus on Shoulder in a larger map
Things have gone pretty well in a year-old pilot program to let bus drivers drive on the Interstate 40 shoulder to get around traffic jams in Durham County, so the bus-on-shoulder option will be extended farther east into Wake County.
The pilot program started in July 2012 benefits a few Triangle Transit routes that use a 10-mile section of I-40 in both directions between U.S. 15-501 and N.C. 147 (the Durham Freeway and Triangle Expressway), and in the eastbound direction for two miles from N.C. 147 to Page Road.
An announcement is scheduled Friday about plans to extend the bus-on-shoulder option along I-40 to the Wade Avenue exit, and continuing on Wade to the Blue Ridge Road exit. (8/19/13 update: see 8/16/13 story.)
Meanwhile, Triangle Transit and I-40 travelers: If you have any bus-on-shoulder stories to share, now is the time and this is my email address. Thanks!
