Friday is Veterans Day and local and national businesses are offering lots of special deals and freebies to salute our men and women in uniform, past and present.

There are discounts on groceries, clothes and home improvement supplies, free restaurant meals, free music downloads and even a free car wash.

Here's a round up of Veterans Day promotions:

At Harris Teeter, active-duty military and veterans will receive an 11 percent discount after coupons and vic discounts on Friday, which is 11/11/11. A military ID and VIC card are required. The offer excludes alcohol, tobacco, tickets and gift cards.

Food Lion is giving active-duty and retired military a 10 percent discount on grocery orders on Friday. Military ID and MVP card required. Excludes alcohol, tobacco, gift cards, lottery, postage stamps and services. Check at the store for further details.

Belk department stores are offering active military and veterans a 20 percent discount with valid ID Wednesday through Friday. (The discount is 15 percent in home and shoe departments.)

Dollar General is offering veterans, active military, National Guard and Reserve, and their immediate family members, a 10 percent discount in-store on Friday and online Friday through Sunday. Click here for all the details.

Applebee's restaurants are offering active duty military and veterans a Signature Entree for FREE on Friday. Click here to see a menu and a list of acceptable forms of identification.

Chili's is serving a FREE meal to veterans and active-duty military from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. You must show proof of military service. Click here for menu selections and more details.

Golden Corral's annual Military Appreciation Dinner is from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14. The FREE "thank you" dinner is for anyone who has ever served in the U.S. military. No ID is required. For more information, click here.

Hooters restaurants are serving 10 FREE wings to veterans and active-duty military on Friday. A military ID and a drink purchase are required. Click here for more details and a list of participating restaurants.

McCormick & Schmick in Raleigh is offering veterans a complimentary entree from a special menu on Sunday, Nov. 13. Space is limited and reservations are recommended. Veterans must present proper identification. Click here for more details.

Outback Steakhouse will be honoring veterans and active-duty military with free Bloomin' Onions and Cokes all week, through Friday. Click here for more details and accepted forms of identification.

Olive Garden will be serving a FREE entree to veterans and active-duty military on Friday. Click here for the menu and identification requirements.

Subway restaurants are offering veterans a FREE six-inch sub on Friday. Subways are franchises so please call your restaurant to verify participation.

Texas Roadhouse restaurants in Durham, Wake Forest and Fayetteville are offering a FREE lunch to active-duty military and veterans. Vets may choose one of 10 entrees, including a 6-ounce sirloin, two sides and a beverage. Proof of service is required. Click here for more details.

T.G.I. Friday's is offering veterans and active-duty military a BOGO offer on entrees on Friday. You must present a military ID or be in uniform. Click here for more information.

Inns and Bed & Breakfasts throughout the United States and Canada are offering complimentary one-night stays to veterans. More than 500 inns and B&Bs are participating, including at least 17 in North Carolina. Click here for a list and further details.

More than 100 National Parks that usually charge admission fees will be open FREE of charge for everyone for the Veterans Day weekend in honor of those who have served in the military. Click here for more information.

Sam's Club stores nationwide are distributing Hugo canes FREE of charge today through Friday for veterans in need of mobility assistance. Quantities are limited. Sam's Club membership is not required but proof of military service may be required. Click here for more details.

Lowe’s Home Improvement stores offer an all day, every day 10 percent discount to military personnel who are active, reserve, retired or disabled veterans and their family members, with a valid, government-issued military ID card.  All other military veterans receive the discount on Veterans Day weekend and other patriotic holidays. Home Depot stores also offer a 10 percent discount 365 days a year to active-duty military, reservists, retired military and disabled veterans, with a valid government ID. All other military veterans qualify for a 10 percent discount for Veterans Day weekend and other patriotic holidays. Limits apply. Please check the store for details.

Veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan may enter to win one of 6,000 wardrobe makeovers from JCPenney or jcp.com by signing up here through Nov. 20. Veterans must first register for free membership in the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America organization to be eligible for the giveaway of $200 merchandise certificates. Winners will be chosen randomly.

Autorific Carwash in Durham is offering veterans a FREE car wash from 8 a.m. to  5 p.m. on Friday. Veterans need only to inform attendants that they are a vet to receive the complimentary car wash. Autorific car washes are located at 3529 Hillsborough Road and 2925 Guess Road, both in Durham.
