School supply deals (July 15-21)

Bookmark and Share

Back-to-school deals are in full swing with prices as low as a penny. Some are even free.

The deals can be found at the office supply stores and big box retailers, of course. But don't forget the drugstores and supermarkets. They are getting in on back-to-school sales as well.

Even if you don't have kids, think about stocking up your home office or buy the ultra cheap deals and donate them to a nearby school or charity. I know they will greatly appreciate it.

But do your homework please! That includes reading the fine print. Some deals, especially some of those enticing free and penny deals, require a minimum purchase or involve a rebate.

Good quality backpacks

Amy,
This is a great guide that will be very helpful. Thank you. I was wondering if you or anyone could suggest a brand of backpacks that are large (not for a laptop) and also durable. Bargains are great but I rather buy just one backpack that will last the whole school year than two for the same price that rip or tear.

FUL

My boys are rough on backpacks, so I buy ful. Target usually has at least one or two different styles, but I haven't yet done my school shopping this year, so don't know if they're out there yet.

I'm with you on your backpack philisophy!

We've always gone with Land's End, L.L. Bean or other sturdy, good-quality brands that offer a guarantee. I stick the receipt and tag in the file cabinet -- just in case.

All 3 of my kids each had one backpack that took them through elementary school, one for middle school and then one for high school. I think we've had to use the guarantee only once or twice and with no questions asked.

A little more money up front buy way less in the end and way less going to the landfill.
