Redbox raising prices -- no more $1 rentals

Bookmark and Share

As of Dec. 1, the $1 DVD rental at Redbox will be a thing of the past.

In an email sent to subscribers, the DVD kiosk rental company announced Thursday evening that it is raising its prices on one-night rentals to $1.20.

"We want to make sure that you hear it from us first," the email began.

Although the price hike goes into effect Monday, Oct. 31, you can still get a movie for a buck through Nov. 30 if you reserve your movie online.

The company is waiving the 20-cent increase on online orders, the email said, "in order to make the transition easier."

No reservation means you pay the $1.20 as of Monday.

The company attributed the 20-cent hike to rising operating costs, including increasing debit card fees.

Redbox said video game and Blu-ray disc rentals would remain the same.

It's the first price increase for Redbox in eight years, the company said.

Hmm. You can't help but wonder what rival Blockbuster Express will do?
