Scan your card for a freebie (or two) at CVS

In case you missed it in my Sunday Deals post, CVS is giving away freebies this week to everyone who scans their loyalty cards at the store's coupon kiosk.

I stopped in late this morning on my shopping rounds and actually got coupons for two freebies with one scan of my card:

Best school supply deals of the week (Aug. 14-20)

Harris Teeter Super Doubles Update: Deals with Sunday's new coupons

Here's what I found:

Sunday deals are up (Aug. 14-20)

All three drugstores have free items this week, but Walgreens is the most generous with five free items after coupons and rewards plus very cheap M&Ms and a great deal on Cottonelle toilet paper. At Rite Aid, there's free Carefree pantiliners and a great deal on Listerine Smart Rinse and Scope. At CVS, there's a mystery freebie from the coupon machine, along with free Finesse shampoo and Gatorade and a killer Huggies diaper deal. And finally, Kroger has $2.89 a gallon milk, the cheapest price I know of, and 18-cent Dial soap and 39-cent Suave shampoos and conditioners. And if you don't have your school supplies yet, there are deals on those at all four stores. Read on for a store-by-store breakdown.

Coupon database updated with Sunday's coupons

Our coupon database is updated and ready to roll with Sunday's new coupons -- all 115 of them.

No need to wait. You can get a head start on Sunday's deals before they're all sold out at the drugstores.

View the database online or download it, print it out and take it with you to the grocery store.

Report to Aisle50 for the grocery deal of the day

In the increasingly crowded world of daily deal sites, Aisle50.com is scheduled to launch on Monday morning.

Instead of offering up teeth whitening sessions or horseback riding lessons, Aisle50 will be selling groceries at an average discount of 50 percent off retail price.

“It’s stuff everybody uses at a store you already shop at,” said Christopher Steiner, 34, one of the three founders of the Silicon Valley startup, believed to be the first daily deal site in the country exclusively selling groceries.

Aisle50, which eventually plans to go nationwide, is launching in North Carolina and South Carolina in a partnership with Winston Salem-based Lowes Foods.

Amazon goes local with a daily deal

Amazon.com, the behemoth online retailer, is getting into the local daily deals business.

It launched this week in the Raleigh area, the ninth city where it is offering local deals on everything from restaurants to spas and events. The average savings, AmazonLocal said, is 60 percent off regular prices.

Click here to check out the Raleigh site, which launched Thursday with a golfing deal at  Keith Hills Golf Club. Today’s deal is $50 for $100 towards Sapphire Teeth Whitening at Sloop Dentistry.

Amazon is counting on its name recognition and customer base to succeed in the daily deal industry, which has exploded since the introduction of Groupon in late 2008.

Free Starbucks ice cream: Four chances to win!

Here's your chance to win yourself some free ice cream from Starbucks.

I've got two coupons for free pints and so does my colleague Andrea Weigl, who writes our food blog, Mouthful.

Two coupon inserts in this Sunday's paper

You'll find two coupon inserts - one Red Plum and one Smart Source - in this Sunday's News & Observer, plus some bonus coupons.

There will be plenty to clip: 115 coupons with a face value of about $154. Of course, there's potential to save more, especially this week with Harris Teeter's Super Doubles coupon promotion continuing through Tuesday evening.
