Customer service with a smile and a 35-cent refund

When I stopped to fill the gas tank on my minivan the other day, the price was no bargain.

The gas gauge was so low that I had pulled in to the nearest station to my home -- the Lowes Foods gas station in Apex. It was 7 a.m., I was in a hurry and at $3.66 per gallon, I was just grateful to see the price was under $3.70.

I was already back in my car, tucking my debit card back into my purse when a man appeared outside my driver's side window.

It was the store manager, telling me he had just lowered the fuel price by two cents and wanted to refund me the difference.

Free Redbox movie rental

How does a free movie night sound to you?

Use the code F2AMA8TG3 at a Redbox kiosk for a free one-night rental.

I haven't used the code myself, but it's getting a thumbs-up from the freebie-loving folks over on the Fat Wallet forums.

And, it looks like you've got a little time to use this code. It's good through May 8.

Freebie alert: Free toilet paper from Scott

Database updated with Sunday's new coupons

The News & Observer's  coupon database has been updated with all of Sunday's new coupons.

The home-delivered Final Edition of The News & Observer contains two inserts -- one Smart Source and one Red Plum -- for a total of 176 coupons with a face value of about $188.

That's before you double the first coupon, of course, which we have the opportunity to do every day of the week at Kroger, Harris Teeter and Lowes Foods.

Not familiar with the coupon database? You can access it on the right-hand side of the blog. There's a button at the bottom right to view it as a full-size page.

Or, you can download it as an Excel spreadsheet by clicking on the attachment at the bottom of this post.

It's a handy tool, giving you the most timely and detailed list of coupons in the Triangle.

There will be a total of 176 coupons with a face value of about $188 -- and that's before every-day double coupons, which we're fortunate to have at Kroger, Harris Teeter and Lowes Foods.

I'll have the coupon database updated and the best Sunday deals posted early Sunday morning, about the same time your paper hits the driveway.

In the meantime, as of this morning, I have updated the database with last Sunday's coupons so I'm now officially caught up from my time off. Thanks for your patience!
