Get up to $200 in FREE groceries at Harris Teeter with new pharmacy deal

UPDATE: Many folks are reporting that Harris Teeter is restricting this program to customers who have not previously filled prescriptions at a HT pharmacy. This requirement is not spelled out on the punch card, which I gave to members of my coupon class. However, Harris Teeter does specify the requirement in this press release on the program.

Through April 3, you can qualify for a $20 electronic coupon each time you fill a new or transferred prescription at a Harris Teeter pharmacy. It's possible to earn up to 10 $20 credits for a total of $200 in free groceries.

The $20 coupon is loaded on to your cusotmer loyalty card and is deducted from your next purchase. Just a heads up: You can't stop the credit from coming off your order so be prepared to spend at least $20 once you fill a presciption.

Pharmacy Offer

Just to clarify, the credit does not apply to your purchase if it is less than $20, but the credit stays on your VIC card and can be used when you do spend $20 or more as long as you do so before the expiration date.

Although the press release says that the offer is limited to new pharmacy customers, neither the online offer (see http://www.harristeeter.com/in_our_stores/departments/pharmacy/earn_free_groceries.aspx) nor the punch card mentions any such limitation.  In fact, the stipulatiion "Offer not eligible for RXs transferred from or previously filled by any Harris Teeter pharmacy" implies that RXs NOT transferred from or previously filled by any Harris Teeter pharmacy would be eligible regardless of whether the customer is new or not, and that stipulation is redundant if the offer is limited to only new customers.  Nevertheless, when I took the offer to HT, the pharmacist at first refused to honor it because I had had my flu shot there and had had a few prescriptions filled at another HT years ago.  I called corporate customer service.  The rep there told me the pharmacist was right.  However, after I asked to speak with a supervisor; told him that neither the online offer nor the punch card mentions having to be a new customer; and pointed out that when customers clicked to get details on the e-Vic Alert offer, they were taken to the online offer, not to the press release, he told me he would look into the matter.  He called back later to tell me that there had been a mixup in communications, resulting in the offer to customers saying one thing while the press release and instructions to the HT pharmacists say another.  He said that they would honor the online offer for the four prescriptions I had already taken to HT but not for any more and that they were going to send corrections to HT customers telling them that only new pharmacy customers are eligible.  However, that was five days ago, and they have still not sent out a correction so far as I can tell.  I wrote the supervisor with whom I spoke an email saying that I think HT should honor the offer as originally presented for all customers and send a correction of the policy to the pharmacists telling them that all customers are eligible.  He wrote back that he would forward my concerns to the appropriate management, but I have heard nothing from anyone yet.  My advice is for everyone to call HT corporate customer service (1-800-432-6111, option 2) and complain about HT's refusal to honor the terms of the online offer sent to customers and printed on the punch cards.  If they continue to refuse to honor the original offer, I am considering filing a complaint with the BBB and state and federal government regulators.

HT pharmacy deal

The link says that this offer is only for VIC customers who have never used the HT pharmacy.

???

I see that on the link. I'm

I see that on the link. I'm wondering why the actual punch card does not say anything about being a new pharmacy customer.
I know last time around when I did the program, there were no such restrictions.

Anybody out there been able to use the card??

Amy:

Many thanks for your helpful column!! I disagree with your reading of the "spend at least $20 notice". It sounds to me that if you do not spend at least $20, the pharmacy-generated "coupon" will not kick in. It will kick in on orders over $20. Am I missing something?

HT Pharmacy

Let me know if your experience is different, but I had a couple of these credits on my card last time around and went into the negative at the register. The customer service folks were very nice, transferring my order to the front desk while I went back and shopped some more. (They told me they had no way of stopping the credit.) It worked out in the end, but I would have preferred to spend my $20 credit a bit more thoughtfully.
