Food Lion shares coupons with shoppers on Facebook

Bookmark and Share

Food Lion is offering shoppers a new way to save at the supermarket -- through Facebook.

Earlier this week, the Salisbury, N.C.-based grocer announced the launch of a new coupon app on its Facebook page that allows shoppers to access coupons.

Updated weekly, most of the coupons are manufacturer offers but some are store coupons for Food Lion brands, such as the My Essentials line of products.

Much like sharing a story or photo on Facebook, shoppers using the coupon app are invited to "share" their favorite coupons with Facebook friends by posting them on their Facebook timelines.

The coupon app was developed by the Valassis company that also distributes the Red Plum coupon books inserted in Sunday newspapers.

Currently, shoppers must print the Facebook coupons, but Food Lion spokeswoman Christy Phillips-Brown said a new "click-to-card" feature is in the works, which will allow shoppers to load the coupon discounts onto their Food Lion loyalty cards.

"This is the first launch," she said. "In the weeks and months ahead, we'll be doing enhancements."

Most supermarket chains doing business in the Triangle, Food Lion included, already offer digital coupons in one form or another.

Some stores offer the e-coupons through their websites or weekly emails; others through third-party companies such as SavingStar.com and smartphone apps such as Ibotta.

But Food Lion is the first in the Triangle to adopt the Facebook couponing platform.

Check out Food Lion's Facebook coupons HERE. Right now, there are 29 coupons offered, including:

*.30/1 My Essentials hotdog or hamburger buns
*.60/1 Home360 foil
*.35/1 My Essentials ketchup or mustard
