The Lochmere swim team overcame an 80-point deficit after the morning 10-and-Under session and surged past runner-up Shepherd's Vineyard of Apex to win the fifth-annual South Wake Invitational Meet at the Lochmere Swim and Tennis Club in Cary on Sunday.

The S.W.I.M., hosted by the Marlins of Raleigh Swim Team year-round club, drew 10 teams and almost 500 swimmers who compete in Wake County's Tarheel Swimming Association summer league. (Top finishers and record-setters are below.)

The meet was one of four championship-style meets being conducted for TSA teams by area year-round competitive clubs and community clubs. Greater Raleigh Swim Meet also was held this past Saturday, hosted by the New Wave Swim Team at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.

With more than 10,000 youth swimmers on 78 teams this summer, the Tarheel Swimming Association long ago outgrew any single season-ending championship meet.

These days, four meets give the recreational summer league's swimmers a chance to experience a multi-team, championship-meet atmosphere.

Although the four meets being held this weekend and next in Raleigh and Cary are conducted by Wake County club teams and not the Tarheel Swimming Association, TSA teams are the invited participants.

The season's summer sports camps are flying by, too, but a few spots remain in camps offered by colleges, professional teams, pro athletes, high schools, grade schools, churches, parks and recreation departments, nonprofit organizations and for-profit enterprises around the area.

The camps cover a variety of sports, including baseball, basketball, football, golf, hockey, jump rope, sailing, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball and wrestling. Multi-sport camps give participants a chance to try a variety of sports without having to pay for several camps.

Volunteers are needed for scorekeeping and team check-in July 26 through Aug. 1 when the 18-and-Under ASA Girls Fast-Pitch Softball Southern National Championships are played at Raleigh's Walnut Creek Softball Complex at 1201 Sunnybrook Road.

Grayson Murray, one of the state's most outstanding young golfers, on Monday won a sectional qualifying tournament and advanced to the 156-player field for the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.

Murray, a Leesville Road High School golfer who last month won the N.C. High School Athletic Association 4-A championship, shot a second-round 66 on Monday at Bradford Creek Golf Course in Greenville for a 134 total and a one-stroke victory Jonathan Diianni of Kernersville.

Even when temperatures push 100, it’s basketball season in the Triangle.

Nineteen AAU boys teams from the region converged over the weekend for the Kenny Inge Invitational Tournament at Cary Academy.

The tournament, named for and hosted by the former N.C. State star, raised scholarship funds for underprivileged kids and was put on by the Basketball Heights charitable foundation, tournament spokesman Rob Orton of the Cary Cougars said.

The action is in Cary this afternoon and evening as BMX riders take to the Sk8-Carys' 12,000-square-foot street course. 

Riders have the skateboarding and biking park to themselves for the BMX Day event, which lasts 3-10p.m. today. It will be a great opportunity for would-be BMX riders to observe and learn. 

Laura Wearn of Charlotte led wire-to-wire in winning her first major championship title by four strokes over defending champion Katherine Perry of Cary at the 61st N.C. Women's Amateur Championship in Gastonia.

Wearn's final round 74 was the highest round she shot throughout the N.C. Women's Golf Association www.ncwga.com event, which was played Tuesday through Thursday at the 6,024-yard, par-36-36--72 Gaston Country Club layout.

Lori Beth Adams of Burlington was third, followed by Corrine Carr of Pinehurst in a tie for fourth. Courtney Rouse of Holly Springs was seventh, and Wendell's Ashley Denton shared ninth.
