Trash pickups set back one day

All Durham's solid-waste customers will have to live with their garbage 24 more hours than usual this week. Due to freezing temperatures tonight and freezing rain expected Tuesday morning, collections have been rescheduled a day later than usual.

Tuesday pickups will be done Wednesday and so on (weather permitting, Bull's Eye assumes). However, bulky-item and yard trash collection is cancelled for this week.

County offices open at noon Monday

In light of hazardous travel conditions expected Monday morning, Durham County is delaying its office openings until noon.

“This delayed opening should allow our employees and citizens the time they need to safely access our facility,” said Michael Ruffin, county manager.

Hold that trash tomorrow

City Hall has called off solid-waste pickup Monday due to unsafe streets, spokeswoman Beverly B. Thompson said this afternoon.

Bulky-item and yard-waste pickup has been called off on Tuesday as well. Department management will decide on Tuesday solid-waste collection after assessing Monday's street conditions, and then announce make-up plans.

According to Thompson, street conditions are improving this afternoon, but snowmelt is slow because temperatures remain near freezing. Street crews have repeatedly cleared thoroughfares since precipitation began Friday night, and estimate that they have salted or cleared about 60 percent of the secondary roads.

Residential-street clearing may start Monday, depending on conditions.

Library follows commissioners' lead

Following the county commissioners' example, the Durham County Library is keeping all its branches closed on Saturday due to the weather forecast. Check the library website for updates or call 560-0169.

In face of forecast Farmers' Market carries on but county commissioners cancel

The town is in a tizzy over the predictions for nasty weather. While the Durham Farmers' Market promises to be open for business Saturday no matter what, and Duke Park residents are emailing each other about good spots for sledding, the Durham County commissioners have already called off Monday's work session in anticipation of ice, snow and general misery.
