West-by-God-Virginia shines during power outage

A Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter got stranded in West Virginia on her way back from a South Carolina beach, having missed all of the news about powerful storms that ravaged the state the night before. She was running out of gas and all of the gas stations and restaurants on the interstate were without power.

She found some good ol' mountain hospitality.

"But, the people of West-by-God-Virginia trumped Nature's whims. She could have her way with her wind and her hail but they would have their say, too. And what they had to say was 'Sit down and have a cool drink and let us help you find your way home.' "

Read her touching tale here.

Czajkowski, defense spark Wolfpack to 23-7 win over WVU

ORLANDO - Senior place-kicker Josh Czajkowski had a memorable finish to a productive career.

N.C. State’s defense bounced back from some late-season struggles against the pass. And the Wolfpack delivered the first bowl win in coach Tom O’Brien’s four seasons in a 23-7 defeat of No. 22 West Virginia on Tuesday night in the Champs Sports Bowl.

10U Tarheels win girls basketball tournament

The host Triangle Tarheels defeated the Greensboro Gaters 35-28 to win the five-team Triangle Invitational girls 10-and-under AAU basketball tournament played Saturday at Long Mill Elementary School in Youngsville, coach Ahmad Smalls said.

Sarah Gutierrez led the Tarheels with nine point.

3 the key to Duke-WVU

It's ironic that Duke spent five seasons living-and-dying by the 3-pointer and couldn't get to the Final Four.

Now that the Blue Devils are at the Final Four, because of their
ability to defend and find other sources of offense besides the 3,
their fate against West Virginia on Saturday in the national semifinals
rests on ... you guessed it ... the 3-pointer.

Status of WVU point guard uncertain

West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said Monday he doesn’t not know whether
point guard Darryl "Truck" Bryant will be able to play against Duke in
the national semi-finals on Saturday.

"I don’t have any idea. We’re not going to [practice] today, and we
really won’t know until we see what he can do tomorrow and Wednesday,
and see how he progresses," Huggins said.

West Virginia 35, ECU 20

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — It was one year and six days ago that East Carolina upset then-No. 8 West Virginia, the highest-ranked opponent any ECU team had ever beaten.

That historic win seemed like, well, history on the Pirates' return trip to West Virginia on Saturday. The new-look Mountaineers overcame a mountain of mistakes and cranked out 509 yards of total offense to handle ECU 35-20 at Milan Puskar Stadium.

• ECU drives down to WVU 24 but turns it over on downs. That's all.

Dem dar toofless West Virginins

When I see a news story datelined from West Virginia, my body
involuntarily contracts, waiting for the blow. Nine times out of 10, it’s not a good news story, although there are plenty of good people and heart-warming deeds of note that could find their way into stories if anyone were looking for them.
