Tuesday's high school sports postponed

All of Tuesday's athletic events in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school system were cancelled or postponed due to the threatening weather across the district.

That includes four varsity events for Carrboro, three of which have been rescheduled for Wednesday.

Carrboro's cross-country team and tennis teams both will host conference events at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, and the Jaguar volleyball team will host Raleigh Charter at 6 p.m.

Tuesday's non-conference soccer match between Jordan and Chapel Hill has been moved to Oct. 20. School officials also opted to switch the site of a match next Monday with Cedar Ridge to Chapel Hill's home field.

A field hockey match between Carrboro and East Chapel Hill has not been rescheduled at this time.

Other events already scheduled for Wednesday — like Carrboro's soccer match at East Chapel Hill High School — are set to go on as planned.

Aquatic center powers up, re-opens

The Homestead Aquatic Center will open at 1 p.m. today (Saturday, Aug. 27) after a morning closure due to a power failure. The power failure was caused by downed power line during the high winds. The power issue has since been resolved, and the facility is operational.

Town of Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation staff are prepared to reopen the facility and resume its normal schedule. For pool schedules, visit http://www.townofchapelhill.org/index.aspx?page=1123

UNC cancels 'Meet The Heels'

The University of North Carolina has cancelled its “Meet The Heels” football event, scheduled for Saturday (Aug. 27) evening in Kenan Stadium. The university cited the potential for inclement weather and dangerous winds from Hurricane Irene.

With the season starting the following week, the event will not be rescheduled.  Carolina opens its football season versus James Madison on Saturday, Sept. 3.

Hurricane Irene blows away Carrboro match

Among the casualties of Hurricane Irene even before it hits North Carolina will be The Brittany Soccer Showcase. That means Carrboro's boys soccer match with a talented Swansboro team, originally scheduled for Friday night in Wilson, is cancelled.

Most Triangle high school football teams are still scheduled to play Friday night, but many of those playing farther east or south are opting to play Thursday night or postponing for a later date to avoid the heavy rainfall expected along the I-95 corridor over the weekend.

For example, Durham Hillside at Fayetteville E.E. Smith has been moved to Thursday.

The Brittany for the Boys soccer showcase in Wilson, which was scheduled for Friday and Saturday, was also canceled. It's traditionally been a major draw for prep soccer, bringing in scores of teams every year.

Mike Petty, a spokesman for The Brittany organizing committee, said the decision to cancel was made so that traveling teams would be able to change their motel reservations, chartered buses and dining plans.

“To allow them to make their cancellations in time to avoid charges, it is necessary to make our ‘go, no go’ decision now rather than waiting for later weather updates and the right decision is to cancel,” Petty told the News & Observer. “If we err, we choose to err on the side of caution.”

The Chapel Hill News and the News & Observer's Preps Now blog will update you on changes to high school schedules as they are received.

Hillside baseball with East is postponed

Durham Hillside's baseball game with East Chapel Hill, originally set for today, has been postponed to 5 p.m. Thursday. Standing water on the campus after Monday night's severe storm left the field unplayable for Tuesday.

More than 40 RDU flights scrubbed on a warm day in the Triangle

As a huge storm of snow and ice covers much of the Midwest and Northeast, more than 40 RDU flights to Chicago, New York and other cities have been scrubbed so far today.

Most of the cancellations posted online were scheduled before noon.

Expect more cancellations this morning and later in the day as snow and ice pile up on airport runways elsewhere in the country -- while the Triangle enjoys an unseasonably warm, damp day. The RDU temperature at 6:45 a.m. was 64 degrees.

Check your airline. Check RDU's flight status page.
