N.C. man stars in Super Bowl commercial

An aspiring actor from Goldsboro could have an audience of 250 million people on Super Bowl Sunday. But he needs your help.

Jason Walston (right), a 2007 Elon University graduate, is featured in one of the top five commercials – out of more than 6,000 consumer-submitted entries – for Doritos’ sixth annual “Crash the Super Bowl” contest. The top two vote-getters will be aired during the Feb. 5’s Super Bowl broadcast on NBC. Those are determined by online voting.

The commercial, called “Hot Wild Girls,” was produced by Brad Scott and Nate Watkin of Denver. In the ad, an actor shows off the power of his smartphone by asking for things like Doritos, which suddenly appear (our Tech Junkie blog has video). Walston’s character then asks for “three hot wild girls,” but the phone misinterprets his request and hilarity ensues.

Stephen Colbert weighs in on Tiger's Nike commercial

I wrote something here yesterday about Nike's new Tiger Woods commercial featuring the disembodied, lecturing voice of Tiger's dead father (I thought it was weird). Last night on "The Colbert Report," Stephen Colbert mocked the commercial, offering up some pretty funny alternative voiceovers Nike could have used. My favorite is the Gene Wilder clip from the Mel Brooks classic "Young Frankenstein." Check it out:

What if Tiger Woods made Google's Super Bowl commercial?

You know that awesome Google commercial that aired during the Super Bowl? Well, this is why I love the internet:

Raleigh group wins $650k for "Underdog" Super Bowl ad

The Super Bowl commercial in which a crafty dog tricks a guy out of his bag of Doritos placed second in a national competition, scoring big bucks for the Raleigh production company who put the ad together.

The “Underdog” commericial by 5 Point Productions of Raleigh, won $50,000 from Frito-Lay and another $600,000 for being chosen as the second-place favorite among all Super Bowl ads by the USA Today Ad meter. The ad, which was filmed in Bond Park in Cary, came in second to the Snickers ad featuring Betty White and Abe Vigoda. In another review, Time Magazine gave the commercial a B-

The Letterman-Leno-Oprah Super Bowl ad

One of the most bizarre Super Bowl ads so far features David Letterman, Jay Leno, and Oprah Winfrey sitting together on a sofa as Letterman complains that it's the worst Super Bowl party ever.

And yes, they were all three together for the taping in the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York. Apparently, Leno had to sneak into the theater in disguise to preserve the secrecy of the taping, which was described as cordial.

On the passing of Oscar Meyer and classic TV jingles

Oscar Meyer, the man who taught my generation how to spell "bologna"
better than "Sesame Street" could have ever dreamed, died on Monday at the age of 95. (I still replay the jingle in my head sometimes when writing b-o-l-o-g-n-a, and often wish Meyer had made commercials about "harassment" and "Australia.")

Time magazine TV critic James Poniewozik has an excellent blog piece looking at Meyer's TV legacy through his unforgettable TV commercials. Poniewozik has videos of two classic Oscar Meyer commercials embedded in his piece, but we couldn't resist posting this one, too. Relive the magic after the jump.
