Roundup of Earth Day 2013 freebies

Ride Raleigh's buses for free, trade in your dish liquid or laundry detergent for an eco-friendly version, pick up a packet of flower seeds and learn how to turn your old T-shirts into high fashion.

It's all free in celebration of Earth Day.

Here's a roundup of just some of the Earth Day freebies available in the Triangle.

An Earth Day freebie from the Disney Store

The Disney Store is offering a freebie to celebrate Earth Day.

Trade in five plastic grocery bags for a Disney-themed reusable tote on Monday, April 22.

You'll have your choice of a bag from the movie "Cars 2" or the movie "Brave," according to the Disney Store blog, The Buzz.

In the Triangle, head to the store at Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh.

Swap your cleaner for an earth-friendly version at Whole Foods

Coming up this Saturday, Whole Foods stores in the Triangle will be handing out free eco-friendly cleaners in exchange for a conventional version from your cleaning cupboard.

In honor of Earth Day, the stores will be replacing your laundry detergent, dish liquid or all-purpose cleaner with a natural version from the GreenShield Organic line of products.

Your bottle can be new or nearly empty so if you've been contemplating a switch to green cleaning, this swap is a great way to try an organic product with no out-of-pocket expense.

The exchange runs from:

2nd annual Triangle Canning Swap set for Aug. 19

Local food blogger Matt Lardie, author of greeneatsblog, has organized the Second Annual Triangle Canning Swap for Aug. 19.

If you start now, you have plenty of time to can some goodies to swap with your fellow canners at Durham's Fullsteam Brewery next month. Here's how it works: bring five jars of homemade jam, jelly, chutney, salsa, preserves or pickles. Bring copies of your recipes to share if you like. Names will be dropped in a hat and chosen at random, and the swaps will occur until everyone has their five jars. The fun starts at 3 p.m.

To sign up, go to the Facebook page for the Second Annual Triangle Canning Swap.

I canned 20+ jars of old-fashioned pickles this weekend so I'm all set and ready to swap. (See photo above.) See you there.

Swap coupons today at McDonald's in Cary or Raleigh

Two McDonald's restaurants in the Triangle are hosting coupon swaps today, June 21. So sorry for the short notice!

The swaps will be held at the following McDonald's from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.:

  • 3508 Millbrook Road in Raleigh
  • 1830 Walnut Street in Cary

After a trial run in the spring, both restaurants have decided to hold the swaps on the third Thursday of every month.

If you've never attended a coupon swap, I highly recommend it. It's a great way to gather extra coupons for the products your family regularly uses.

To participate, simply gather your unwanted clipped coupons, put them in an envelope and bring them to exchange with others. Envelopes are typically passed around the table until everyone has had the chance to look through all the envelopes.

Q&A with the Centsible Saver

Q&A with the Centsible Saver is an occasional feature on the blog. If you have a question for a future Q&A, leave it at the bottom of this post or email it to adunn@newsobserver.com. Ask me anything about coupons, rebates, saving money and living the frugal life.

This time around I've got questions about online coupon-printing sites, the liklihood of Super Double or Triple coupon promotions at Kroger and the best way to get multiple copies of coupons for items you regularly purchase.

Read on for the answers.....

Looking forward to Saturday's coupon class!

If you're registered for my coupon class tomorrow, here are a few reminders:

Bring a donation of canned or dried food donation for the Food Bank
of Central and Eastern North Carolina. It will get you a second ticket in our drawing for door prizes, which, I must say, are pretty nice. Gift cards and movie passes are among the items up for grabs.

Bring your extra clipped coupons in an envelope. I'll answer questions and we'll swap coupons.

If you need any coupon organizer supplies, the folks from CouponOrganizerPro.com will be on hand, selling everything from fully loaded coupon binders to sets of extra pages. Cash and checks only.

Check your in-box for an email giving you all the details on parking, check in and breakfast.

Class will start promptly at 9. We've got a lot of ground to cover. See you then.
