It wasn't much of a crowd Tuesday night at Memorial Auditorium, but the Wake County school system paid more than $5,000 for the event.
School officials say that they weren't charged for rental of the facility for the community forum to hear the superintendent finalists. But they say they paid $5,095.65 to cover the reception, which includes the food, the sound system, microphone set up, lights, audio mix boxes for reporters and stage set up.
There were only around 100 people inside the venue to hear the candidates. A chunk of the crowd consisted or current school employees and former school employees.
Memorial Auditorium at Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts has a capacity off 2,263. The crowd was small enough that Renee McCoy, the forum's moderator, urged people to move up to the front section to make it "more intimate."
