This is a post by N&O restaurant critic Greg Cox:
Curious about what a chocolate-covered bacon soda tastes like? Or maybe you’re craving a grape Nehi just like the one that was your favorite when when you were a kid.
These are just two of the more than 240 bottled soda varieties on offer at Corbett’s Burgers & Soda Bar (126 Kilmayne Dr.; 919-466-0055; corbettsburgers.com), which opened yesterday in Cary. Thoughtfully grouped by flavor category in refrigerated display cases, the bottles cover a rainbow spectrum - and then some - of colors and flavors. The number of orange sodas alone runs to well over a dozen.
To go with your soda, you might want a burger, made from a quarter pound of beef that’s double-ground fresh daily, patted by hand, and grilled over an open flame.
Running the meat through the grinder twice assures more even marbling and a better texture, according to owner Corbett Shope, who runs the friendly little eatery with his wife, Mary.
Burgers are available with a variety of toppings, including chili, pimento cheese, and buttermilk coleslaw - all homemade. If you’re really hungry (and thirsty), the 2 Bottle Burger ought to do the trick: a triple burger with three slices of American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, bacon, BBQ Island Sauce and Tangy Ranch Sauce.
There’s a vegetarian spicy black bean burger, too, as well as a salmon cake burger and an assortment of hot dogs made with Nathan’s Famous frankfurters.
Dessert? A root beer float, naturally. Or maybe a milkshake, with options including lemon meringue, dulce de leche and cupcake in addition to the usual suspects.
Corbett’s Burgers & Soda Bar is open Monday-Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday-Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
