'All My Children': You write the ending

You've likely heard the sad news: ABC has canceled 'All My Children' after 41 years on the air.

We want to help fans get a little closure by hearing how you would end the show. Does a tsunami wipe out Pine Valley? Would you send Erica Kane on a murderous rampage? Or maybe a tricky 'Newhart' type dream explains it all away?

Email us your idea -- a one paragraph synopsis will be fine -- and we'll publish the best entries here on Happiness is a Warm TV. The author of the most entertaining idea will receive a $100 Amazon gift card.

The final episode of the 'All My Children' will air in September, but we want our entries by April 29. We'll announce the winner on May 6.

Remember, send your entry to me (brooke.cain@newsobserver.com) by April 29.

Soap Star Spectacular comes to Raleigh

Stars from CBS soap operas will come to Raleigh this month to meet and entertain local fans.

The "Soap Star Spectacular" consists of a Q&A session where fans can quiz the stars, a live trivia game in which fans try to stump the stars, and an interactive session in which fans can write for and then direct the soap stars in on-stage scenes.

Fans who purchase a VIP package will also get to attend a pre-show event where they can mingle, get autographs, and have their picture taken with the actors. The VIP package also comes with priority reserved seating. And every fan attending is entered in a chance to win a cabin for two aboard Soap Cruise in January.

So which stars will be in town?

Own some of the images in the "All My Children" archives

Remember when Erica Kane and her first husband Tom Cudahy went on their honeymoon in St. Croix? Or when Hayley Vaughan (Kelly Ripa) arrived in Pine Valley dressed like a punk rocker with black hair?

Then you must be a fan of "All My Children," and this might excite you. In honor of the show's 40th anniversary, the producers are opening up the photo archives and making them available for purchase starting today. The gallery has about 40 cast images from every year of the series since it premiered in 1970.

There's more: if you just love Erica, Susan Lucci has signed a limited number of photos of her character from her first month playing the role. If you buy one, you'll get a certificate of authenticity. I have to say, looking at the "then" and "now," 40 years have been good to La Lucci!

Latest actor to lather, rinse, repeat: Charles Shaughnessy

It's officially a trend. Accomplished (or at least famous: see Hasselhoff) actors are returning to their roots. Their soap roots.

David Hasselhoff did it, Julianne Moore did it. Now Charles Shaughnessy is doing it. Shaughnessy will return to his role as ISA agent Shane Donovan on "Days of Our Lives" in June for a 10-episode arc, which could revolve around the funeral of "Days" matriarch Alice Horton (Frances Reid, who died earlier this year). His character's long absence from the show is attributed to imprisonment in South America.

David Hasselhoff returning to "Young & the Restless"

David Hasselhoff is returning to the place where he got his start -- Genoa City.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Hasselhoff will return to "The Young & the Restless" this summer to reprise his role as Dr. William "Snapper" Foster, Jr. He was on the show from 1975 to 1982, when he left to star in "Knight Rider." Hasselhoff went on to launch "Baywatch" and was a judge on "America's Got Talent." On Y&R, Dr.  Snapper left Genoa City to accept a teaching fellowship in London.

The Hoff is currently slated to star in his own reality show, which will air this year on A&E. The show will give a behind-the-scenes look at Hasselhoff's life as he raises his daughters and helps one try to launch a singing career.

"Days of Our Lives" matriarch dies

TV Guide is reporting that "Days of Our Lives" star Frances Reid died yesterday at the age of 95.

Reid played the noble matriarch Alice Horton on the show for 42 years. Her last appearance on the show was in December of 2007.

She was nominated for Daytime Emmy Awards in 1979 and 1987, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.

Frances Reid was married to actor Philip Bourneuf for 39 years, and they had no children. But as we all know, Alice was married to Dr. Tom Horton, and leaves behind five children: Addie, Mickey, Bill, Marie, and Tommy.

CBS cancels "As the World Turns"

CBS announced today that it is ending the soap opera "As the World Turns" after 54 years and more than 13,000 episodes.

The soap, set in the fictional town of Oakdale, Illinois, premiered in April of 1956. Its last episodes will air in September of 2010.

Earlier this year, the network canceled "Guiding Light," which had been on either TV or radio for 72 years.

Actresses Meg Ryan, Julianne Moore, Parker Posey, and Marisa Tomei all got their starts on "As the World Turns," which has won four 'Outstanding Drama' Daytime Emmy Awards.

"Victor Newman" to return to "Young and the Restless"

"Young and the Restless" fans can relax. Victor Newman is returning to Genoa City.

Sony Pictures Television cut Eric Braeden's salary from $1.5 million to $1 million and the actor opted earlier this month to leave the show. His last episode was to have aired on November 2.

But TheWrap.com was the first to report last night that Braeden, who has played Victor Newman for almost 30 years, has agreed to accept the pay cut and return to the show.

Braeden told Entertainment Weekly just over a week ago that he had "pulled the plug" on negotiations. He also explained that he had taken a 10% pay cut two years ago and had offered during negotiations this year to take an additional cut on top of that, but that it wasn't enough for Sony.

Antonio Sabato talks about his VH1-sponsored search for love

Does this guy look like he'd have trouble getting a date?

OK, it's an old picture. But still it's hard to believe that Antonio Sabato needs reality show help.

But of course, he's looking for l'amore. And even a soap opera star and former Calvin Klein underwear model might have trouble navigating those waters. So on his new VH1 reality dating show “My Antonio”, airing Sunday night at 10, that’s his quest, and Sabato seems to take it
seriously. (We'll have a review of the first episode on Friday.)

His earnestness could make a married woman think twice. (Just kidding, honey.)

Happiness talked to the punctual hunk – the phone rang precisely on the hour scheduled – about his efforts to bring a little class to dating shows, his ex-wife and his mother.

How to see soaps disrupted by Michael Jackson services

WRAL, WTVD, and WNCN will all carry live coverage of the Michael Jackson memorial service this afternoon, which means soaps, game shows, and other normal programming will be disrupted.

WRAL says they will join "Guiding Light" in progress, depending on the length of the service, then "The Price is Right" at 3pm, and "The Young and the Restless" at 4pm.

WTVD says they understand that ABC is just skipping soaps today, so viewers shouldn't miss anything. Just to be safe, you might want to check out SoapNet, which shows repeats of ABC soaps. That's channel 63 if you have Time Warner Cable.

Not sure if NBC is skipping soaps as well, but WNCN says it will not show "Days of Our Lives" at an alternate time today.
