Smithfield-Selma names new football coach

David Lawhon is the new head football coach at Smithfield-Selma High School, principal Mike Taylor announced this afternoon.

Smithfield-Selma football coach resigns

Frank Lassiter has resigned as Smithfield-Selma High School's head football coach and from his social studies teaching positions, the school announced this morning in a statement.
The Spartans were 0-11 in 2011 and 1-10 in Lassiter's first season, 2010. 

Greater Neuse River 4A Conference boys soccer playoff seedings are set

East Wake won the Greater Neuse River 4A Conference boys soccer championship. The Warriors will be the league's top seed in the state playoffs, which begin next week. Knightdale finished second, followed by West Johnston, Clayton and Garner, who will all advance to the postseason.

The state soccer playoff brackets should be out this afternoon or tomorrow. We'll post here when they're released.

State dual team girls tennis playoffs begin tomorrow, brackets out

The NCHSAA girls tennis dual team playoffs begin Tuesday with matches involving nine Triangle-area teams in the 4A ranks and several other Triangle-are squads as well. Most matches begin at 4 p.m.

Schedule set for Greater Neuse River 4A Conference volleyball tournament

The Greater Neuse River 4-A Conference volleyball tournament will begin Saturday at Knightdale High School. Play continues on Monday and Wednesday. Regular-season champion Garner is a huge favorite in the event, having won its last 31 matches against GNRC opponents.

Celebrity basketball game set for SSS High

Smithfield-Selma High School will host a celebrity all-star basketball game on Saturday at 8 p.m. The game is expected to feature Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks, former Duke player Nolan Smith, former N.C. State player Damein Wilkins, Jarrett Jack of the New Orleans Hornets, Chuck Ward of the Cary Invasion among others.

Jerry Sands back with Dodgers

Smithfield-Selma High graduate Jerry Sands has rejoined the Los Angeles Dodgers active roster. The Wilson's Mills native got the call up when MLB rosters were expanded to 40 players.

Sands hit .200 in 41 games during his first stint with the Dodgers with 2 home runs and 17 RBIs. He spent the summer in Triple-A, hitting 29 home runs in just 94 games.

He has yet to make a plate appearance since rejoining the Dodgers.

Smithfield-Selma jayvee football game postponed

Today's scheduled junior varsity football team between Smithfield-Selma and Nash Central has been postponed since Nash Central is not in school today. The game will be made up at a later date.
